Local Turkey Day
Mr Chiot’s and I are so excited about this Thanksgiving. We ordered a turkey from Robert’s Farm, they’re pastured turkeys. They live in these turkey tractors, each week when I go to the farm they are in a different spot in the field, that way they can eat bugs & grass. When I was out at the farm picking up my milk & eggs I snapped a few photos of the turkeys. I think they have to be some of the ugliest animals (along with opossums). I wonder which one is ours?
We will pick it up the Sunday before Thanksgiving freshly butchered. I have high hopes for the deliciousness of this turkey.
Any of you getting a local turkey for this Thanksgiving?

LOL! Mine’s coming from the backyard!! :) Actually, that ugliness grows on you after awhile. ;)

I don’t know which farm ours will come from because we ordered online but I know it will be a heritage turkey raised humanely and for not that’s good enough. For Christmas I’d like to see if I could find someone “local” in Lancaster County.

Next year maybe for us. But we’re bringing as many trimmings to dinner as we can. Cranberry sauce, turnips (maybe) sweet potatoes, potatoes, whatever we can use from our CSA share :)

I agree with Ang – the ugliness grows on you because they are so darn likeable. I can’t tell any of our’s apart, but they are so engaging I really enjoy raising them as a farm animal.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of your bird. We didn’t care for turkey until we raised our own. Delicious :)

Great to hear Trapper Creek, I’m not a huge fan of turkey, but I’m hoping that this will be a winner. I don’t like factory chickens either, but the ones from the farm are delicious and juicy (and more chickeny). Makes sense, those of us that eat healthfully and exercise are much healthier than those couch potatoes that eat all the processes bi-product food.

Followed you over from Trapper Creek just to see how your farmer does his turkey tractors. My turkeys free-ranged this year, but I’m not sure that that’s going to work for next year.
I agree that the ugliness grows on you. I just took mine to be harvested last night and I already miss their cooing and gobbling, their grandiose displays and their heads that change colors when they argue with each other. I wasn’t sure I’d like raising turkeys, but I like them more than my chickens.
I’m sorry about your dog that got attacked. That’s horrid. I hope she heals with no complications.

Okay so where is Robert’s Farm – how much do they cost? Mark got one two year’s ago and it was awesome but he was working up in Lakewood and got it from a local delli.

Opossums are not so ugly. Baby opossums are very cute. They come to my backyard to eat the cat food and the fruits from my trees. Once in a while the babies come in the house so I grab them and take them to animal control. The ones that stay outside I leave them alone. Opossums are considered beneficial animals so they are not euthanized over here in southern California. They are taken to the hills and released. The babies are taken to opossum sanctuary where they are kept till they are big enough to be released in the hills. Isn’t that great? By the way, opossums are resistant to rabies so they are pretty safe to have them around in the backyard. Since the opossums showed up I no longer have slug and snail infestation. They love to eat the slugs and snails. I no longer have to use baits. One problem I have with them is that they love to leave presents in the greenhouse where I keep my orchids. Sigh lol.
