Gardening Quote: Thomas Jefferson

January 31st, 2009

“Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to it’s liberty and interests by the most lasting bands.”

-Thomas Jefferson

Anyone ever visited Monticello? It’s one of those places I would love to visit but haven’t had the chance.

I haven’t seen Monticello, but it is also on my to-visit list. I drove by a couple times, but couldn’t stop. Reading about the architecture and all the fields, the Farm Journal…. it sounds amazing.

We had a chance to go visit when we lived in Virginia. It is beautiful! I particularly loved the way the house was designed for air flow- definitely a must in the summers there. We need to go back sometime now that we have children and let them see it as well.

I took a guided tour of the gardening and agricultural areas and works a couple of years ago and it was amazing. We owe so much to Jefferson as gardeners and lovers of plants.

They maintain the gardens there and one of my best memories (and pictures, if I can find it) of that entire vacation is of an artichoke flower that was so iridescent it almost glowed. I tried to grow them here, they just won’t take the winters. Although I may have to try again just for fun. Before they flower and develop the chokes, they are ugly as sin.

No, I’ve not yet been there. But it’s way high on my list of gardens to visit. Someone needs to send that quote to our new President. Wouldn’t a veg. garden at the White House be something?

I agree with deedee. The picture is the perfect antidote for January blues.

I’m hoping to go to Monticello this summer during the height of gardening season to see the gardens in all their glory. I’ve read a few books about the gardens at Monticello and have always been fascinated by the design of his vegetable garden. I can’t wait to see it!

    Hey Susy,

I will be there around July 5, 6, or 7.

Any chance that is your time window?

Also, seeds are in the mail.

I have wanted to visit Monticello for a while as well. I have always heard about heirloom varieties originating in the Monticello garden…so, why not visit the place of origin?

    I’ll get there someday…

    ;)

I went to Monticello as a kid. I remember thinking TJ was probably a pretty neat guy, but can’t remember much else. Those are the trips that are almost wasted on kids. I would much rather go now.
