A Day at the Beach in Fort de Soto, Florida
It’s been cold here in Ohio this winter. We usually have warm days mixed with cold days, but it seems like it’s just been cold for weeks on end and we’ve had snow on the ground for about a month. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the snow and I don’t mind the cold, but every now and I then I just want to be warm.
I’m not much of a beach person, don’t like salt water or sand; but every 5 years or so Mr Chiots and I end up at the beach during a vacation, or on a work trip, or while visiting friends. So since many of us are sitting in the cold snowy weather here in the north I thought we could all use a virtual trip to the beach to warm us up. So take off your shoes and join us on a trip to the beach.
Two years ago around this time we found ourselves in Florida for a convention. We have some family that lives down there so we made a short vacation of it. While there, we visited Fort de Soto park, which is a beach and a historical trip all in one. Fort de Soto was described as a, “spectacular combination of soft white sand, calm, clear water and a laid-back atmosphere”. We enjoyed a short walk on the beach and then we visited the fort and took a tour of all of the old buildling and learned all about the history of the area, it was fascinating.
It’s nice to take off your sandals and take a walk on the beach looking for shells. I don’t mind a short walk on the beach, it’s the sitting in the sun that I can’t take. My dermatologist would fire me as a patient if I did that.
Of course no trip is complete without the obligatory self portrait (does anyone else do that?).
Are you a beach person? What do you like or dislike about the beach?

I like the beach, but I like it in active mode. What I mean is that I can’t seem to relax at the beach – I’ve got to be running, playing in the waves, exploring, etc. My mother loves to sit and watch the water for hours, just mesmerized. I can’t. Whenever I visit her and we head to the beach, I get antsy after 5 minutes of sitting there!

I LOVE the beach! We make family trips to the Outer Banks in North Carolina every few years to spend time with my husband’s family. I’m a bit with Mangochild, I like ‘active mode’. I love to be out in the water playing in the waves. Plus, when you’re at the beach with children, you’re always ‘on alert’ so while it’s fun it’s never really relaxing. I do love sitting on the deck at night watching the water. That’s relaxing! One night last summer, the waves were bioluminescing as they rolled in. It was spectacular!

No. No beaches for me. Can’t stand the sun, the water, the sand, the people . . . I’m much more of a mountains kinda girl.
The sad irony is, we have our OWN beach. On a lake, with rocks instead of sand, but still . . . I go swimming maybe twice a summer. This drives my family nuts. I’m sorry. I’m just not a swimmer.

I’m with you Kristin, I don’t like the sun, the sand, the water. Hiking and camping the mountains is my favorite kind of vacation. Mr Chiots and I usually take this kind.

I love the beach, and I consider “hiking vacation” to be an oxymoron. Isn’t it nice there are lots of different kinds of places for all of us to go? ;)

I love these pictures (and OF COURSE always do the self taken pics!) I leave Wednesday for Tampa – for my Girl Power 2 Cure Mother’s Advisory Board meeting – I am SOOOOO excited! These pictures just got me MORE excited! Although with the heat wave of 50 degrees yesterday – I can see grass in my yard today! YAY!

I could absolutely live on the beach except for the hurricane part. I love to be too hot and too sandy and all buttered up with sunscreen…
We usually take a self-pic at the beach though we’ve been going with family lately…so we get pics without the self part

Our beaches here in Oregon are usually overcast, windy, rainy (sideways rain) and about 50 degrees…but for native Oregonians (like me and my husband), this is what makes the beach exciting and enjoyable. Makes us feel tough, too, to go walking in that and come back drenched and chilly. :-)

I think I would like Oregon beaches. I love a good challenge. There’s no such thing as inclement weather just improper dress!
