You Know You’re a Gardener

March 14th, 2009

You know you’re a gardener when pots of plants & seeds start taking over your house (especially this time of year). I have little pots of various things sitting all around the house in any little spot of light I can find.

Many of these will end up out in the gardens in later this spring, but these little guys will stay inside. Hopefully I’ll be harvesting herbs from there pretty soon.

Is your home being overtaken by seedlings?

Not yet. They have their light set up downstairs in the laundry room. Eventually the plants will outgrow it and I’ll have to find places for at least my tomatoes.

This really made me laugh. We started gardening last year and just really got into it and are really excited for this season. we’ve been planning for months. I have little starter pots EVERYWHERE! In my freezer, on a homemade shelf in my living room, on windowsills. It was starting to make me crazy so I am so glad it’s nice enough to move them outside now. I feel like I have my house back :)

I love those little pots! Would be perfect for my windowsill (I think…or maybe I just hope!) Remember where you picked them up?

I think I got them at Ikea or Target (they were super cheap, I wish I had bought more). I think I only paid $1 for all 3.

My dining room is a jungle. The tomatoes are a foot tall, the eggplant are taking over, the peppers germinated in THREE days! And there’s still 2′ of snow on the ground.

Oh, tomatoes that are a foot tall, how lovely. I have only started my sub-arctic tomatoes. All the others will get started here this weekend or on the next rainy day.

I’m just about to head out to the maple sugaring farm for the day (open house there!) but I had to post because I was showing one of my friends pictures of my seedlings and she said it looks like they are taking over my kitchen/family room – they are just sprawled wherever they can catch the light and I’m forever hopping over them like a fiend. But they are growing, and that’s all that counts, right? :-)

They aren’t taking over my house yet, but they are overtaking my dreams.

I have the bug bad this year.

I know what you mean, it gets worse and worse every year!!! I have terrible cabin fever this year. I think next winter I’m going to take up sprouting for winter veg & for something to grow. Next rainy day I’m going to be adding a few more flats to my lighted area. I think my lettuce & onions will be going outside soon as well, they’ll be freeing up 3 lights, perfect for all those tomatoes I’m growing.

        Hi Susy,
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your web site.
It makes me feel like “Yes, I can plant a garden just like yours”.
Because I read all of your postings, I got this magazine in the mail and I thought of you as soon as I started reading it. It’s called Our Ohio. We get this magazine because we’re members of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. It has an article about a produce auction in Mt. Hope. The web site is ourohio.org. Do you know anything about it? You can click on the magazine icon and read about the auction. My issue is the April/May one.
Let me know if you have any trouble getting to it.
The pictures of the animals are great!!!
        Have a great day,
        Sharon

Mine are still contained under the lights in the basement for the moment. But when they need transplanted into bigger pots- who knows. I’ve got another bank of lights that I can put up, but that means giving up the other table in my basement- but it is totally worth it!

I’ve got lights in the office for tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. I’ve got lights in the barn with brassicas and onions. And the 3 flats that were in the cold frame have been in the living room since Tuesday due to overnight temps below 20. Finally they can go back outside today.

Of course, pretty soon I’ll have to pot up the tomatoes and then we’ll really be overrun…

hahahaa oh yes I have 3 seed flats that I am rotating under my ONE grow light. So when not under the light they are on the kitchen counter. Which means i have 1/3 less space to prep meals but I’ll live with that for my babies :)

Mine are also fairly well contained in the basement. We just had a few seedlings pop their heads up today. We have a serious lack of decent sun in the house so even when they get moved to larger pots they’ll still likely stay in the basement under the lights.

I just got a tray that has the individual little containers you soak in water, then plant. There are 72, and I only let myself get one. I haven’t planted them yet, but hope to in the next couple of days. I grow lettuce right in the ground, and eat the thinnings.

Yes, I have a seed tray behind the wood stove, marigolds are sprouting there, basil in the dinning room. I plan to start peppers and tomatoes this week!
