Quote of the Day: Minnie Aumonier
“When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden.”
~ Minnie Aumonier
This is one of the things I love about gardening. It seems like all we hear is bad news, everywhere. Not in the garden, only the sounds of birds and the smell of earth. The plants don’t care what I wear or whether I have the latest & greatest thing, it’s very peaceful when you’re working in the garden.
Is gardening a peaceful activity for you?

Lovely thoughts – thankyou! And, yes I agree whole-heartedly. It’s hard to continue being stressed, worried or annoyed when the birds are singing, bees are buzzing and the plants are finally growing!

What a wonderful thought! I’m also planting more this afternoon, and yes, it is the most peaceful thing in the world. Hard to be stressed over the rest of my life when I am focused on the needs and joy of my garden…. even though there are worries there too (“did my eggplant transplant well? How much light now?”) it is of a completely different sort that just makes me explore options rather than worry in the regular sense. I’d say it revives me, makes me feel more grounded and able to handle things as they come.

Yes, it’s a very peaceful place for me. I love the feel of the dirt in my hands and the smell of the soil. When the birds and the sound of my shovel hitting the earth are the only things I hear….that is music to my hears.

I agree with your sentiments entirely. And to add… when friends complain about the rain, I think about how happy it makes my garden and farms everywhere.

Most of the time I find the garden relaxing. I especially get relaxed by hearing the buzzing of the bees. Occasionally it can lead to stress, like when the local groundhog decides to eat all your plants, but that hasn’t happened in a few years.

When I finally get out there and get my hands in the dirt, it is a relief; one can just shut out the world’s demands and just smell, hear, and see the beauty. Unfortunately I’m too likely to add the needs of the garden to my “to do” list, which moves it over into the stress column. I need to work on that!

My garden is my therapy. What a great quote. I post pictures here: http://groceriesgardenanddinner.blogspot.com/
I have been enjoying your bee posts. I want to get bees, but need to find a way around our city code which defines them as a nuisance.
Happy spring,

Anything is better outside enjoying creation, including gardening. I love to get outside and do stuff (but not ‘sports’) – walk, wander the yard, putter with flowers and vegetables. It’s so peaceful. Happy Easter.

Gardening, for me, is absolutely about peace and solace. I have a very stressful job and being in the garden helps me take my mind away from work and relax. It’s a very important for helping me stay balanced.

You know, I have been lurking around your blog for a while now…..and watching and reading…..and I thought I better say hello.
First of all Happy Easter.
Second, thanks for your inspiring blog…..I love it.
I so agree about the garden and the dirt. Just as my pets do, my garden doesnt care at all how I dress or think or act. It just wants me to come out and play often!
Thanks

I first read about Minnie Aumonier on a sign at a Pond Pro Shop. “There is always music among the trees and in the garden. But our hearts must be very quiet to heart it” When I took my primary school age children hiking in the woods, I asked them to walk silently so they too, may hear the “music” of the wounds.
Now that I have retired from teaching, I seek the music of my backyard for solitude from the “strife”and sadness of our world. For a few hours each day, I am at peace and enjoy nature’s music.
