Quote of the Day

April 22nd, 2009

Turn your face to the sun and the shadows will fall behind you.

-Maori Proverb

sunny-shadows
Sometimes all I need is a little sun on my face to make me feel better, particularly after a few days of rain (like this whole week so far). Hopefully I’ll see the sun tomorrow!

What help lift you out of a somber mood? coffee? the sun? reading? family?

I smiled reading that quote as it has long been one of my favorites. The sun always lifts my mood, as does looking at my garden and thinking of all the life out there, working to keep going despite weather, insects, and human errors. And I’d have to add my family – they give me unending support to make it to the other side in somber moods and remind me to keep working and keep going. Often, thinking about something other than my own thoughts – focusing attention on something else that needs my care – can help me bring some prospective and find something to be glad about in the moment. I hope the sun comes out for you soon!

Lovely Proverb! Hope you feel better soon! We seem to get that every spring in Boston — 10 days straight of rain. It’s always so exciting when it’s over to see what good it brought to the garden.

The sun and my son both lift my spirits. Now if only I could get the latter to call occasionally :>

The sun definitely lifts my spirit too and we have been sorely lacking here lately!

There are other things as well…seeing my kids at the end of the day, seeing my wife, birds at the bird feeder, bees at the hive. Hmmm…the sun is the most powerful though as far as really changing my longer-term mood

MMMM, pancakes. That reminds me that I need to make some to eat with our maple syrup.

My mood is approximately 58% better when I wake to sun than on any given cloudy day. If it is winter and the days without sun is in the double digits, it peaks at or near 92%. But yes (sigh) there is that requirement for April showers to grow the things we love. Calls from friends and family lift me exponentially as does traipsing around hunting for new growth and buds among the leaves. Coffee used to be a great lift, but I gave it up. Now it’s a good night’s sleep, a smile from my groggy honey, and a wagging stretching Beagle first thing. And good blog readin’!

I’m still hooked on coffee. A delicious latte made by the resident barista will lift my spirits almost any time.

I really don’t mind cloudy days, especially rainy ones. Great opportunity to get out and do some macro photography as the lighting is perfect. Now when it comes to grey days in Jan & Feb that’s a whole other story. That is just down right depressing.

Coffee is to make me function at work. 5 minutes in the garden makes me human again.
