Rainy Days in the Garden

June 19th, 2009

We finally got some much needed rain on Tuesday night, all day Wednesday and Thursday morning. I was excited on Wednesday afternoon when I looked at the rain gauge and we had over a half an inch of rain!

We’ve been really low on rainfall this spring, so it was refreshing to have to take a couple days off and let everything in the garden get watered in well. There were some pretty nasty storms with tornadoes spotted in areas around us, but it seems like all the severe stuff skirted just south of us, so we only got the good kind of soaking rain.

By the end of the rain storms we ended up with over an inch of much needed rain. The plants are all well-watered and my rain barrels are full and I’m happy!

I actually love rainy days, I usually end up cooking and cleaning. Wednesday I made a delicious loaf of sourdough bread and a big batch of braised red cabbage.

What about you, do you love rainy days? (take the poll)

It was a torrent of rain here too as I was driving home yesterday, I actually had to pull over because I just couldn’t see. We’ve had a cool, rainy spring though, so a bit less rain wouldn’t be a bad thing. I don’t especially love rainy days (especially 4-5 days a week!) but I do like what the beneficial rain does for the plants, and how it is necessary to avoid fire, give us water that all life needs… and how it makes me appreciate the sunny days.

Yup. We had a rainy day here yesterday, too. I finally got to all the housework I’ve been putting off, because who wants to dust when you can be outside in the garden?

I generally do love rainy days – but during our winter months, that is pretty much all we get is rainy days and so sunshine is appreciated even more. This spring we have had an unusually early start to summer with a long stretch of zero precip for 4 weeks and warmer than normal temps for about 3 weeks. This morning we have a light drizzle and I am appreciating it and wishing it would get more serious and actual RAIN versus “shower/drizzle” as the garden is much in need of a good soak.

We had rain yesterday and I did just what you did — cooked and cleaned! I had lots of energy and got a lot done, but today it is sunny and I have already been out and about in the garden. There were tornadoes in the area here last night, too. Virginia Beach really got hit — haven’t heard damage reports yet. I was just there on Wednesday! Janet (PS – love the tomato in the rain photo!)

I love it for the garden, hate it for the slugs, the kids don’t like it unless they are jumping in puddles, the camel hates it the llamas don’t mind the rain. Sooo I guess we have a love/hate relationship with the rain here in Western Washington State where it rains a LOT!!! Kim

That’s too funny that your camel hates the rain!

I love being inside on a rainy day – all snug and cosy! I love the smell of the garden after it has rained too.

I’m sorry to say that New Jersey must have had some of your rain. We’ve had almost nothing BUT rain for two weeks and counting. My tomatoes are stunted from a lack of sun.

On the bright side we haven’t needed air conditioning …

That is a lot of rain! We’ve probably had 3-4 in the last 39 days, and that’s being very generous (it’s actually probably more like 2 inches I think).

After a 28 day dry spell we have rain, and it is certainly welcome.

I like rainy days only when I can stay home, and don’t have to be out on the crowded streets in Hong Kong :)
