Annabelle Hydrangea

June 24th, 2009

I have always loved hydrangeas, ‘Annabelle’ hydrangeas in particular. Mr Chiots bought me one for my birthday last year (remember that packed MINI?). I planted it last year and it’s blooming quite beautifully this year, it seems to be quite happy where it’s planted.

It’s in my front flowerbed with a grape vine behind it and a ‘Frosty Morn’ Sedum in front of it, a pink peony on one side and a purple balloon flower on the other, it also has a few hollyhocks behind it. It’s definitely a show-stopper in the garden, I love it!

What’s your favorite flowering shrub?

I love hydrangea’s too. My husband bought me one 3 yrs ago for Mothers Day and the poor thing looked half dead when he gave it to me (“it was the only one left honey”). Boy did it spring back to life. It’s a beautiful blue. This year we picked up another one and I already have some blooms on it. I still want to get a few more. I just love them.

Oh, mine is definitely the hydrangea! I have three peegee “sublime” hydrangeas in my front yard, but I love all kinds!

I’m a big fan of Annabelle, as she’s somewhat shade tolerant (provided she gets enough to drink), and I have two in my front garden that are marshalling for a big show sometime soon.

Last year I planted two Hydrangeas I had I hopes for: Limelight (an Oblio-headed peegee form that is supposed to be chartreuse) and PinkyWinky (same form, but pink tipped in white). Neither have done anything at all for me. Limelight is definitely sulking. PinkyWinky’s looking a touch better, but certainly not up to expectations.

Another new Hydrangea I’ve read about (sounds great, too) is QuickFire, which is like PinkyWinky — or like PinkyWinky is *supposed* to be — but which flowers a whole month earlier. Now that sounds appealing.

I too have a limelight, which I love (it’s planted on the shady side of our house). I have a pinky winky as well, which I also got last year. I thought it had died over the winter, but it finally sprouted. We’ll see what happens later this summer. The deer were pretty tough on my hydrangeas this year. I have many different kinds scattered around the property and they nibbled on most of them. I’m surprised I’m getting any blooms at all.

I love oakleaf hydrangeas. They grow so big and put out so many shoots, we have them all over our yard.

I have an oakleaf as well, hope it puts up shoots all over the place. I’m going to try to propagate it this summer.

Did you know that there is a Pink form of Annabelle available next year? It’s called Invincibelle Spirit? This link provides a powerpoint like presentation on the plant.
