Big Big Wolf Spider

July 20th, 2009

While moving everything out of the basement for our big project, our friend Shaun was startled by a HUGE wolf spider on the wall of our bilco. It happened to be right by his face when we have making a trip back down into the basement. As you can see, she was a pretty big spider, she was carrying her egg sac with her (that’s how we know she’s a she).

They collected her in a pint jar and saved her for me to see when I got home. This is a big spider for here in NE Ohio, but since I grew up in South America with tarantulas she really doesn’t seem all that big. We let her go in the in the woods, where she’ll be right at home. I don’t mind seeing spiders around the gardens, I know they’re beneficial insects. If I see them in the house and they’re little jumping spiders they get to stay. If they’re big wolf spiders like her I usually catch them and put them outside.

What about you, do spiders freak you out or do you not mind them?

Big spiders like that totally freak me out. I don’t kill them though. I make my husband rescue them and release them outside.

…Gosh I am so glad to hear someone else does that too! My friends and family think I am nuts with saving spiders. I have a jar under the kitchen sink that is there just for that purpose, when a spider has made its way into the house I just capture it in the jar and take it outside. Happy me – happy spider – happy garden… :o)

    …Thanks for posting this!

    …Blessings… :o)

I have to admit, I freak – especially if they are THAT big…the bad thing is, Charlie does too!

Spiders totally give me the heebee jeebees. I think they play an important role in nature and weirdly don’t mind them outside as much. As long as they aren’t on me and they aren’t too big. Inside I just get totally freaked out. I’m a tosser and turner in bed. If a spider gets there I get all bit up. My husband thinks I’m insane and spiders never get in the bed. HA! Any spider that is found inside my husband must dispatch. I can take care of the bees and wasps that freak him out. Of course I don’t kill those. I just let them outside.

I don’t mind them at all. There are all kinds of spiders here. It must be the weather.

I get pretty freaked out by spiders. When we were staying at the house where you grew up your dad said I could sleep in Alex’s old room. I think that room has just become Martins storage closet. It was pretty rough in there, I don’t think it was touched since Alex slept in it last. I started cleaning it then I got paranoid thinking I might upset some creepy crawlers. I just chickened out and slept in Sasha’s room instead. Your dad thought that was pretty funny.

My older sister was terrified of spiders, and since she liked to pick on me, I knew I could get her back by chasing her with a spider. Until my next-door neighbor was bitten by either a Hobo or Brown Recluse while she was working in her garden, I could tolerate spiders and didn’t have a problem picking them up. Now, I’m a bit more nervous around them.

Spiders (and bugs in general) inside the house freak me out. I’m more than willing to let them be outside (unless they’re eating my garden), but I just cannot stand them inside. I typically ask my hubby to dispatch them for me. Sometimes he gently moves them outside and other times they’re squashed.

I do have to say, though, that spiders freak me out a whole lot less than the earwig – since it’s shady and cool here we’re in constant battle with their intruding numbers.

I don’t like earwigs either. I find them around here often being a shady wooded area.

Just last night I put out a fairly large running wolfy-looking spider. I generally just shoo them out.

Lately, I’ve been killing the widows in the yard, just because there’s so many little children around. I feel badly when I do. I don’t mind them, but I’d prefer not to host them physically.

They are fine out of doors. Not a big fan of them inside my house though.
