Farmer’s Market Goodies

July 29th, 2009

I was finally able to head to the farmer’s market last Saturday after not being able to go for a month (busy Saturdays working for our business). I found all kinds of lovely things to buy, including a lot of green beans.

Dexter thought they were wonderful cat toys that I bought for him. He stole a few and I found all 3 cats playing with green beans later that afternoon. No need to spend $4 on a furry mouse, a green bean from the farmer’s market will do. I’m guessing they would also love small turnips and beets.

Have you found any unexpected uses for produce this summer?

This year has been about getting creative with my produce in preparations that I’d never have tried before. But with the odd growing season and nature of getting things gradually (some produce is “in season” only for a few weeks, then goes to make way for others) has made it a necessity. No unexpected uses like yours so far, though this post does make me think of when I was a small child and loved to simply bang on eggplant and potatoes for the different sounds that different produce made :-)

No new uses, but some new foods and recipes. Made some collards with ham this weekend and a new green bean recipe that is just awesome.

Just found a recipe for Basil Ice Cream on the Diggin food blog (http://www.digginfood.com/2009/07/basil-ice-cream/)….sounds yummy and we have lots of basil!

My dog has an addiction to dried chicken filets and I’ve been trying to find a substitute treat. This morning I discovered that she loves fresh raw green beans. I break them up into one inch pieces so she doesn’t choke.

Congrats on the ripening tomatoes – they look beautiful! Ours are still poking greenly along.

I make our dog dried sweet potato and squash chews, she LOVES them. I simply roast sweet potatoes or squash in the oven until soft and slice about 1/2-3/4 inches thick. Then I put on a drying rack in the oven set at 170 or in a dehydrator. They’re cheap healthy snacks for dogs.

Argo LOVES cucumbers. When I used to grow them in containers on the patio, he’d pick them himself and go lie down in the corner of the yard to eat them. It’s so weird what pets find interesting.

Lucy loves eating strawberries, blueberries and raspberries right off the plants. She loves just about any veggies (except lettuce she only eats with a little vinegar).
