Old Friendships

August 18th, 2009

I spent this weekend in Cincinnati, OH with a few of my girlfriends from college. We had a great time staying up late, chatting about everything we’re doing now and things we did then.

We enjoyed eating all the food that’s specific to the great city of Cincinnati like Skyline Chili and Graeter’s Ice Cream.

We visited the campus of our alma mater and got the see the excited new freshman moving in (which is what we were doing 15 years ago). On Saturday night, we went downtown to watch a movie at Fountain Square and enjoy the city life like we did in college.

We even took a carriage ride around the city that night (because of the economy they’re the same price they were when we were in college 15 years ago).

We all live in different places now, with families, kids, husbands and dogs keeping busy with our individual lives. It’s always good to drop all of that for a weekend and get together to remember the fun times we had back when we were young and in college without a care in the world (or a cent to our names).

Do you ever get together with old friends?

I perfectly agree with you about making time for a get together with old friends. It certainly brings back all the beautiful memories of our youth and it is always great to be able to laugh and giggle again. Beautiful photos.

No matter what, the photos are always delightful. Whenever there is a picture of Suzie’s hands, they always remind me of Wendy and her girls. And whenever I think of the crazy little redheads I smile…so thanks for the smile.

Mr. Finch has his college friends over about once a week for games. Most of them still live in the area and keep in regular contact. My friends have all gone to the corners of the world – some almost as far away as one can get from here! We keep in touch as best we can. Most of my closest friends are from after college – and we see each other about once a month at the LEGO meetings. :)

My two best friends and I manage to sneak away for a weekend together about once a year and we always have a really wonderful time. Laughing until your side aches, catching up on what is happening in our lives and with our families, and having permission to not be on duty as mom / wife / CFO for just a few days is priceless.

I agree that it is important to keep in contact with old friends…

Some I do still contact and see on occasions – I would like to see them more often. But it’s easy when working to forget about because you’re too tired/busy and so on.

My oldest friendship has to be with someone I’ve pretty much grown up with, and is like a brother. We’ve known each other since we were 4, so it’s over 20 years we’ve pretty much been best friends. Even though I don’t get to see him as often as I would like, because we’ve known each other so long it’s like we just ‘know’.

I attended my 19th class reunion this weekend…it was absolutely a great time! Half of us didn’t recognize each other…even those of us who were pretty good pals…but it was a bit like we never went our separate ways…it was a great time!

My moms side of the family is from that area… Dayton to be exact (and then on to Fairborn during the great depression). Even though I was born here in California, mom ingrained in me the love for the Cincinnati Reds.Go Reds! I havent been back there for a number of years, but definitely want to check out the new baseball stadium.

I never have quite embraced Skyline Chili, but I can get behind the Graeter’s sentiment. Especially around Christmastime when they have the peppermint. Mmmmm.

I visited my alma mater a couple of years ago, and I had a great time stomping around all my old favorites.

Skyline Chili has got to be one of my husband’s favorite meals. I can’t eat it, though, as it gives me the worst stomach/intestinal issues *ever*. I’ve come up with a dish very reminiscent of the original, though which seems to fit the bill for him. I know if I showed him this post it would bring back memories for him!

I am really curious – what part of Cincinnati did you stay? I am from Cincinnati (actually, I still live here), and a friend of mine shared some pictures of Skyline that turned out to be yours…
Sorry. I am tired and that was possibly the worst sentence I’ve ever uttered! :)
Anyway, I’ve enjoyed the pictures and I’m glad you had fun In Cincinnati while you were here!
