Blanket Flower ‘Oranges & Lemons’

August 25th, 2009

A month or so ago, Mr Chiots and I were at a butterfly garden in Cleveland and he spotted a Blanket Flower ‘Oranges & Lemons’. While shopping at a greenhouse a week or two later he spotted some and had to buy them for the garden here at Chiot’s Run.

They really are beautiful flowers and the bees love them. I can’t wait until next year to see how lovely they’ll look in full bloom. Now all I have to do is decide where to plant them.

Anything new in your gardens this summer?

I had one of those last year that didn’t make it back. I bought two and put them in different spots that were drier hoping that they would like those areas better. Gaillardia likes the full sun and can handle xeric conditions. I’ll add this one (O&L) every year if I have to! As for new stuff I’ve added a bunch including a ninebark ‘Diable’ and a Beautyberry.

Two wonderful plants I have found for my front porch containers are Helenium amarum ‘Dakota Gold’ and Fuchsia ‘Autumnale’. I have planted them with Creeping Sage, Impoea ‘Desana Lime’ and ‘Blackie’, Bacopa ‘Cloud 9 Hot White’ and Calibrachoa ‘Royal Blue’. The color combination is spectactular spilling over the containers.

I planted zinnias from seeds given to me by one of my favorite Ohio bloggers…they were/are beautiful! I am saving seeds so I can plant them again!

Glad you enjoyed them. I have a few other things I’m saving seeds for this year if you’re interested.

I am definitely interested! I had planned to save seeds this year but the over abundance of rain ruined nearly everything we planted…next year. Anyhow, I’d love to have any seeds your offer…

I bought one of those a couple of years ago – it bloomed beautifully that season, but the next year it didn’t make it back. I had let it go to seed in the fall and I got a lot of seedlings the next year, but none of them looked like the parent. They all looked more like plain old gaillardia. Which are also nice. But I agree that the ‘Oranges & Lemons’ is quite lovely.
