One Lonely Gourd

September 5th, 2009

I started bird house gourd plants this spring. I gave one to my mom and I kept one to plant on my trellis on the garage. My mom had a gourd set fairly early on, it’s pretty big now. Mine is still fairly small but it seems to be growing.

I was hoping to get more than 1 gourd since I was wanting to give them out for Christmas. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to try again next year. It was just something I decided to grow to add a little fun to the gardens.

Anything fun growing in your garden?

Papayas, holy basil (tulsi), arugula, Thai and Italian basil, pineapple sage, rosemary. I love it all so much. The tulsi is my favorite, don’t tell the others.

Weeds. Lots and lots of weeds. Though I wouldn’t really categorize them as “fun.”

I’ve got exactly twice as many gourds as you…2! Mine are birdhouse also. I’ve got mine planted in a barrel, I will trying putting them directly in the ground next year and see if I get any more. Kim

I meant to grow gourds for the kids this year but never did. I was planning on making a tunnel and have the gourds grow over it. Just for fun though we planted sunflowers and pumpkins! I’ve counted about 5 green Jack-o-Lantern type pumpkins coming along!

I’d love to grow pumpkins, but I’m short on space. I planted some at my mom’s yesterday but the day before we were going to harvest them the deer got them – GRRRR.

I had trouble with gourds this year too and I’m not sure what the trick is. I had many gourds last year and I didn’t do anything differently.

In any event, giving gourds at Christmas probably wouldn’t have worked (at least not for this year). Your gourd will probably get kind of moldy on the outside and fairly unattractive until it is completely cured. My gourds from last year took almost all winter to dry, but once I cleaned them up, they look fantastic.

I planted seeds of watermelon, cucumber, and the birdhouse gourd, Then it rained for nearly 3 weeks, everything washed flooded and ended up elsewhere. Does the gourd plant flower look like a cucumber flower? If so then I lost my gourd. I dug up and put in large pots and moved in to sun. Could you show me a good shot of a gourd leaf? Thank you awesome pictures, you have real talent.

Yes it does look like a cucumber, they’re in the same family (curcurbit) so they look very similar. The blooms also look like cucumber blooms, mine were white on my birdhouse gourd, but it may be the variety or cultivar I grew.
