Joe Pye Weed

September 9th, 2009

I particularly love Joe Pye weed. It’s such a lovely plant, so tall and commanding in the garden and along the edges of the roads. My mom has a particularly nice patch growing in her beneficial flowerbed. Our soil is a little too dry around here, but I think I’m going to try to start some from seed next spring and see if I can get some growing. I’ll have to amend the soil and keep it watered to keep it at it’s best. Perhaps a rain garden would be a great thing to add to the gardens here at Chiot’s Run.

I particularly want to add this plant to my garden because the bees and the butterflies love it. My mom’s is always buzzing with activity.

What’s your favorite weed, I mean wildflower?

I’ve heard they need stratification to sprout. I may put mine in a flat and put it outside in February.

I think I’m partial to the golden rods and ironweeds. The ironweeds are about done blooming but the golden rods are still showing strong.

I too adore Joe Pye Weed, it never fails! Another plant which never fails, in my yard is the only thing to keep noxious perennial buttercup in check is Sweet Cicily. It has feathery, fern like leaves, beautiful and soft. It grows in all soil and light conditions, reseeds itself and has a lovely anise flavor in tea. I love clover too, they come in so many colors, shapes and sizes. You sure had a great run this year in the garden, it was wonderful to follow it with you. Peace for all

Here in Oregon, my favorite flower that is considered a weed by most is Chicory. An amazing blue color, always growing in the dryest worst conditions.

My Favorite [native to California and Oregon] Wildflowers are Limnanthes douglasii, Meadow Foam and Sisyrinchium bellum, Blue-Eyed Grass. They are so beautiful and vibrant in color.

Well it would have to be the wild blackberries…we hate them 11 months of the year but right now during blackberry season we don’t hate them quite as much as we’re eating cobbler!

Queen Anne’s Lace is a lovely weed, Kim
