One Year Ago
One year ago today I was canning pears. Every time I crack open a batch of these pears we have a good laugh.
This wasn’t an ordinary pear canning experience. Not too long after starting my batch of pears a huge storm came through and the lights went out. Since this happens often here in rural Ohio, we expected them to be back on in a few minutes or perhaps an hour at most. Little did we know, it would take days! If you didn’t catch the story of romantic canning by candlelight photos, make sure you check them out!
Any fun memories from your homestead?
Lots of memories of long duration power outages. We live in the land of tall trees and every major storm event tends to result in a power outage.

We do too, usually it’s only out for an hour or so, occasionally a day, but this was the first time it lasted 4 days. Good think our brother-in-law had a generator to loan us!

Yes, I it was a year ago today we were scrambling to get a generator and trucking it back & forth between our houses to keep our fridges & freezers going.

I love your Lights Out Pears. In France, the wine is opened and memories are recounted about the year that produced it: the rain, the sun, the grapes, a family wedding or death. Here at our house, we discuss the same things when we open a jar of cherry jam: Remember the day we picked these cherries, and we laughed because the cherry juice was dripping off our elbows and…?
We’re not just preserving food, are we? Memories too.

That is one of the lovely things about growing and preserving some of your own food. You have so much more of a connection with it. Does a great job and keeping food waste down as well, when you know how much work goes into it you never waste a drop!!!

How long are canned goods safe to use?

I would say for a couple years.

Wow. I thought 6 months. I need to investigate.

Thanks for looking into the time dispute. I should probably keep 6 months as my cut off because I don’t have cool storage.

Was that when hurricane Ike went through? We lost our power for 8 days. Your candlelight pear post is wonderful! Now that’s what I call – dedication!!
