It’s Coming….Fall

September 29th, 2009

I was out working in the garden the day before yesterday planting some lettuce and I noticed that it feels like fall. There’s that chill in the air, you know the one that makes the sun feel good on your back and your fingertips get cold when they get wet. The breeze has been constant and you can hear leaves falling all around.

The fall colors are starting to appear, red, yellow and orange. Around here the first leaves to change are the dogwood trees.

I love this time of year, it’s so relaxing to work outside. I love the colors, the cooler weather, the falling leaves and the brightness of the sky.

What’s your favorite thing about fall?

For me, fall is the time of year to go out to the beach and wander through stormy winds to the backdrop of a whirling sea, to contemplate my life’s directions. (and get a mouthful of sand in the process :-)

I like the temperatures when they have first dropped down from the high 80’s into the 70’s like we have now. Comfortable temperatures with cool breezes! I love the fall colors too but I think everyone does!

I love the sound that the leave make. You know, when you are walking in a wooded area and there is no other sound but the sound you are making by walking on a path of leaves. To me that is fall.

There is something invigorating about the transition of fall. Closure on one season and another that is waiting to arrive. There is a sense of urgency to prepare for the winter that puts new energy into the late fall harvest tasks and garden chores.

The shoulder seasons of fall and spring are my favorites. As a gardener I love the treasure of compostable materials that the fall brings… dried leaves mixed with fresh grass clippings from the last mowings of the year and garden debris from the fall garden tidy up process. My fall compost piles are the richest and most diverse.

So true, I’ve been out cleaning, planting and getting all those things done that need to get done before winter falls.

I too love all the compost! I usually collect leaves with the lawn mower mix them with grass clippings and use them to mulch all the flower beds. It’s a remarkably easy way to keep the weeds down the following spring!

I surely like the crispness of the air and the changing of the leaves. It sounds weird maybe, but I htink October feels almost festive too. I don’t really mean that because of halloween but there is something just feels like celebration to me…maybe it’s garden related…I don’t know. I do like fall except that it precedes winter…not so fond of winter

The lack of humidity, the cool breezes, the colorful leaves, collecting bagged leaves from others for my compost next year, drinking a relaxing cup of tea, going over what happened in the garden this year and thinking about what to do differently, canning apples, cooking things in the oven is now a good thing since it warms up the house, walking with my friends. crushing acorns under my feet as I walk, the scent of the leaves….lots of things.

I’m on the hunt for bags by the side of the road as well. We takes lots of walks via alternate routes to collect leaves.

Fall means having a good excuse and go in and sew…and read some garden books…and stand by the woodstove and drink hot tea! Kim

The sky. Here in the mid Atlantic, summer humidity, stagnant air and pollution really dull the view above. Over the past few days, the winds of autumn have swept the sky clean. Bright, bright blue, and huge cumulus clouds racing overhead. And when I’m outside before dawn, what a treat to see all the stars again.

I love everything about fall! Truly. If I must chose just one thing I’d have to say the changing of the light. The golden hues of autumn days thrill me.
Of course, I love working in my garden in the fall, all the results from my hours of canning the bounty, the colors of the leaves, orange foods-pumpkins, squash, carrots, the smell of cinnamon and cloves in so much of what I am serving this time of year, the sound of the apple butter cooking down on the stove as I type this, the cooler weather, running around barefoot in jeans, grabbing a light sweater to run out, watching the joy on my boys’ faces as we harvest fruits and veggies together, the songs of the birds that descend on our neighborhood just this time of year, pumpkin spice lattes, EVERYTHING!

A childhood memory that reemerges each autumn is the particular fragrance of fallen sugar maple leaves. To me, it evokes the excitement of being back at school (which I loved), cutting leaves and black cats out of coloured construction paper (magical) and dressing up for Hallowe’en (a thrill).

As an adult, it’s the time when you can feel comfortable enough to work up a sweat in the garden – putting the whole season’s ideas and observations to put into practice.

If I can add one more: biting into a crisp, juicy new apple. The taste is never the same as when it’s fresh picked.

I’m jealous. Florida only has two seasons— hot, and hotter.

We’re going to Georgia over fall break, and we’re so excited to see some changing leaves.

My favorite thing is that one day in fall when you look outside and you realize the haze of summer has gone. Everything is so crisp and clear…sort of like a Claritin commercial only TONS better!
