Busy New Year’s Weekend

January 3rd, 2010

We had a busy New Year’s weekend, it was so exhausting I didn’t post yesterday (so sorry)! On Wednesday I spent all day cooking, making some bread for our New Year’s Eve meal with friends and a big chocolate cake for desert. I also made a few other things for the freezer. On New Year’s Eve we went with my dad and some friends down to the family hunting cabin for some target practice.

Mr Chiots wants to spend a lot of time practicing this year so he can get a few more deer during hunting season this year.

Our friends got a new gun and had a good time trying it out.

We headed back to their house for a simple meal of meatball subs with a side salad. Shaun makes the meatballs following his grandma’s recipe, they’re quite delicious.

After a filling meal we played cards and chatted, nothing to exciting, but a perfect way to ring in the New Year!

We watched “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and celebrated the New Year with the usual champagne toast and a kiss from your sweetie.

We hoped to be home and in bed early because we had to be up early the next morning, but we didn’t accomplish that. We were pretty tired New Year’s day, but we still ate a big serving of my dad’s sauerkraut to ensure a prosperous New Year. The kraut we ate was the batch I started in October, it was really really tasty! I was too tired to take any photos of our New Year’s Day celebration (this one was from leftovers we had for lunch yesterday).

Overall it was a great weekend of celebration, I spent all day yesterday sitting on the couch with a good book and cup of tea because I was so tired from the late nights followed by early mornings and all-day activities.

I’m happy that the holiday season is over so I can get back to my normal quiet life at home.

Did you do anything fun this weekend to ring in the New Year?

Oddly enough, my New Year’s Eve also involved a handgun. We went to a friend’s house for a (small) party and he showed us all his new gun. No firing, though. Except of snowballs. There was a lot of snow New Year’s Eve.

Fairly low-key here as well. At home and everyone but me in bed by midnight! I celebrated w/ some Proseco!

I love seeing Little House on the Prarie books on your list! I LOVED them as a little girl, and I recently started buying those book by book to build the collection for my little ones. Some Nancy Drew also! ;-)

Yes, I love the Little House books as a girl and decided to re-read them now. My nieces are the age where they’re starting to read them and they love them.

I have been itching to get back into the garden… so yesterday I decided to move a giant rock border that sits alongside all by raised garden beds…I am soooo ready for spring :)

We went to some friends for New Years Eve, ate, visited, ate some more. On New Years day we watched football and then had some other friends over for cards……and food…….Oh and I made PW’s cinnamon rolls. We sent a plate into the county sheriff’s office for the staff that was working the holiday. I love the photos of the guns, especially Mr. C. and the shotgun shell in the air. Nice one. On a side note, are you happy with your calendars from Lulu? I am trying to decide between Lulu and Redbubble.

I’m very happy with my calendars from Lulu. They’re great quality, nice heavy paper and the photos are beautifully printed.

I love that photo as well, if you look closely you can see the smoke coming from the gun where the shell came out (you can see it better on the larger sized image at Flickr).

I’ve heard PW cinnamon rolls are good, very nice of you to take some to the people at sheriff’s office!

Susy that is funny, my post today covers window shopping in a gun shop! Love the photos of you target practice. I got a new gun with a laser sight that needs some practice and adjustment…then there is a certain raccoon that may need to move to safer territory, he has eaten his last chicken!

I’m glad you had a great weekend, I very much look forward to reading your blog throughout the new year. Kim

About

This is a journal of my small organic gardens in north eastern Ohio, zone 5(a). Our gardens are named after our dog Lucy, a big brown/black lab mix from the local pound. We started calling her “Chiots” when she was a puppy and the name stuck. She thinks the yard and gardens belong to her, she chases away all squirrels & rabbits and the UPS man.

Our yard is very small and fairly shady, we are surrounded by woods all 3 sides. The soil is made up of rocks and clay, not the best, but I’ve spent 7 years adding chicken manure & compost. When we first moved in 8 years ago, the gardens were in terrible shape from years of neglect and too many chemical pesticides and fertilizers. It has taken years to reset the balance of nature and we're finally starting to see the fruit of our efforts. We unearth worms when we dig and we are seeing more and more birds and beneficial insects in the gardens. The soil is also starting to improve after years and years of hard work amending it with all kinds of organic compost.
