Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful

January 5th, 2010

Well, I wouldn’t say “frightful”, I love the snow and cold weather. It has been quite cold around here, temperatures in the single digits with wind chills below zero.

We’ve been getting snow every day, which sends Mr Chiots out to shovel and get some exercise. If we don’t keep the back porch shoveled it quickly become an ice rink that takes weeks to thaw since it doesn’t get a drop of sunlight.

All of this snow of course has it’s drawbacks when you have somewhere to go. They do a pretty good job here in rural Ohio keeping the roads drivable but every now and then they can get a little scary.

Since Mr Chiots lived for many years in Florida and I grew up in South America on the equator, so we really appreciate this weather. I love living where there are seasons.

What’s the weather like where for you: snowy and cold, or sunny and warm?

I would love to see some of that snow down here. The forecasters are calling for a couple inches at the end of the week, maybe, we’ll see! Right now it is cold 10 degrees F and sunny in my TN frost pocket!

The weather here is neither snowy and cold or sunny and warm. Our winters generally are damp and cool and overcast. We got a couple weeks of really cold weather in December but have reverted back to our normal winter weather patterns. We had a tremendous amount of snow last year – so we do get it – but not typically every year and it usually does not stay with us too long. It’s the marine influence that moderates our area so much. Makes for a coolish summer though – which while comfortable is not ideal from a gardener’s perspective.

I live in Seattle… so it’s mild with a little bit of rain… Ohh how I wish it would snow…I’d be happy to be stuck at home…then I could stay in my flannel pj’s all day and sip hot cocoa :)

We are bitter cold. We have a bit of snow, but not too much. I am amazed for the amount of time the snow has been falling, the limited accumulation. I grew up in a snowbelt just east of where I am now, and I had a sled dog (didn’t everyone?) So to me it nice to have snow, but not so much anyone needs to climb out a window instead of a door, but I do miss snowy white winters. We almost had one this year, but then it rained on Christmas (so I didn’t look outside all day, because it was nice the day before). DH grew up here and he says they had more snow when he was a kid (he has memories similar to mine, but no sled dog), maybe a factor in climate change?
I love the seasons and I couldn’t imagine living somewhere that didn’t have spring and fall. I love the first snow, the changing of the leaves and the early blooms as they poke up through the frozen ground.

I love the seasons, live for them! That said, I love the seasons because they change. I’m in NY and it’s bitter bitter cold, and this is right about the time I start to get sick of winter. It’s been a particularly cold one, and we’re going through wood like crazy. Fire’s been going for a week straight now. Yesterday was a balmy thirty and sunny. We walked around the pond, and it felt like old times. I pictured everything in green. I wondered what would grow this summer. Sometimes I think what makes a summer good is a bad winter!

Like Michelle, I am also in California (in Orange County, smack dab at the halfway point on a journey from San Diego to LA). Last week it toyed with the mid-70s. What I really wanted to mention was how clear it’s been over the past few days and what fantastic sunsets and rises we have had this December. Really gorgeous.

Your snow makes our look pathetic. We have only had it for one day and chaos ensues!! I like looking at the snow but hate it if I have to get somewhere

It’s really been piling up here. We got a few inches over night and a few more today during the day. I’d say we’re up to 8 inches or so, not as much as some people, but a nice cover. The snow is a wonderful insulator for the garden!

Well over 2 feet in Hudson, OH just north of you so far not counting the drifts. Had to dig a path to the chicken coop but they just stay inside peeking out their little door. The kids and I skied and snowboarded all day – doing school tonight. I LOVE snow especially when homeschooling!!

This has been the most steadily cold winter in Houston that I ever remember having. We had snow at the beginning of December (earliest snow recorded in Houston history) and except for one or two days of warm weather it’s been at least jacket weather, if not long sleeve weather, ever since. This week is especially cold, getting down into the low 20s multiple nights this week (wind chill could get as low as 9).

As a person who adores cold weather, I’m overcome with joy at my “real” winter! I might actually have to put on an extra pair of socks this week!

Cold and snowy (it’s been that way for about a month already), and it’ll stay that way until April, or there abouts. :/ And I live on a street that’s lucky to see a plow, and even then the plow often just packs the snow and ice down rather than pushing it away.

We’ve also had some cold snaps, with the temperature dipping almost to -30 degrees Celcius!

Sometimes living in Canada isn’t as fun as it sounds!

Where I am in the southern ocean, it is warm, a healthy breeze, sunny with afew wispy clouds – typical mid summer times. I am staying at a friends on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, the Tasman sea is pounding on the waterfront, seagulls calling in that wailing way they have, best of all, the wind is straight off the sea and fills my lungs and soul with rapture ..

The usual Northwest weather…wet, wet, and more wet! The moss is happy, the camel is not! I have the woodstove going and have started another knitting project so I’m good to go! Enjoy your snow, I’m envious, kim
