Winter Storms = Migraine
We had a big storm move through, it started Thursday afternoon and it’s still here today. It dumped 8 inches of snow or more and closed almost every school yesterday.
Unfortunately big weather changes occasionally give me a migraine – ugh. I seem to be a rather sensitive person when it comes to the weather. So I spent the day squinting at all the bright light, thanks to so much snow and some sun. Everything looks like an overexposed picture when you have a migraine.
You find yourself squinting at every light, even the Christmas lights on the porch.
I did enjoy a few cups of ginger tea (made with freshly diced ginger with some honey) and some chamomile tea (helps with the upset stomach that’s inevitable with a migraine). Thankfully it was getting better by evening. I’m looking forward to today so I can enjoy all this lovely snow. Hopefully we get some nice light and I can get out and get a few good photos.

I had my first migraine last year. Yes, it does seem to be triggered by the weather, but our little snowfall hasn’t done it, thank goodness.

Also, my brother, a regular sufferer of migraines, swears by a real Coke (preferably in a bottle) and a hot compress on the eyes. I think it seems counter-intuitive, but he swears by it and keeps those little bottles of Coke (that cost a small fortune) around.

I hope you are feeling better! As far as the weather effecting my mood the increased periods of gray skies and reduced sunlight effects me. Lack of time outdoors in the fresh air does too.

My migraines are triggered by a few things, one of them is sunlight. I have to wear sunglasses if I’m outside. Even in overcast, rainy weather, if the light is too bright, I have to wear the sunglasses. People look at me like a I’m a nut. I figure it’s better to look like a nut than to be down for three days with a headache. :-)
Also … when thunderstorms move in, I get a sinus headache like you wouldn’t believe.

Just found your blog, enjoying trolling the archives. My husband enjoys chronic migraines, so I sympathize. I get reverse seasonal affective disorder – living in Florida (but raised Yankee), I love it when the weather turns grey and cold down here. But I will admit the barometer is starting to make my knees creak more.

I sometimes get a little depressed and some arthritis flareups when the barometer drops, followed by a long, dark, wet “Pineapple Express” off the Pacific — these are more common in El Nino, which means we have an especially dark and rainy (and relative to you, warm) winter in progress. The pussy willows have had bud break already.
Some of us here also have sinusitis during these pressure changes. Not me (so far). Migraine hasn’t been mentioned. But I might not be a good listener. ;)

Weather just affects my mood more than health. I used to get migraines alot but over the past six years they have abated considerably – only get them when I make the mistake of eating something with preservatives in it (huge trigger for me) or am getting truly ill. It’s my bodies way of telling me that I truly need to just take a “lie down” for a while.
I hope you feel better soon. They are perfectly miserable experiences.

Hot weather makes me irritable. I am already hot-natured so it doesn’t take much. It also makes me sick to my stomach, and if I get too hot, I pass out. Unfortunately I live in Houston so that’s at least half of the year. I also get really achy and sore when the pressure drops.
I’m the opposite when it’s cold, though. This is the happiest you’ll see me all year. Oh, it’s glorious.
I’m sorry about your migraines…I hope tomorrow is better.

I’m a grouch when it’s hot.
My migraines are the ones that produce auras; so I can’t really see. I simply close my eyes and enjoy the acid trip. Once it’s over, I’m exhausted. There’s no pain though and I haven’t determined what brings them on.

Oh yes, I get the blurred vision as well. Sometimes I can’t see a thing. I’m always tired the next day as well with a migraine hangover.

You poor thing. The weather can affect people in ways some would never think about. I know my fibromyalgia is worse in the cold winter too.

I can relate to your migraine, I have gotten sever ones since I was a child, usually from sudden weather changes, but also hormones (PMS & pregnancy,) as well as stress (like the one I got last night when I had to take my baby to the ER…) Ug, I hate when it hurts to blink and light makes you nauseated. I am glad your’s is dissipating!
Do you take medication or stick to teas to treat them? I find neither work for mine.

I try to stick to natural medicine, but I do sometimes break down and take something, especially if I have to be somewhere. I generally take Excedrin migraine and on occasion when it’s really bad a Tylenol with codeine. I find that ginger tea, peppermint tea and chamomile help somewhat (especially with nausea). I have found that eating fewer preservatives really helps a ton, at least for me. I used to get a few migraines every month, now I only get a few each year. My last one was in Sept while I had the flu.

I used to suffer terribly from migraines a while ago, and went through expensive medicine after expensive medicine. Then I found out about feverfew pills, and being interested in herbal remedies, I gave them a try. They worked better than the prescription meds, and were a sight cheaper, too!

When the pressure changes, both my husband and I get headaches. Not migraines, thankfully – I used to get those as a teenager but haven’t had many in the past few years. I hope yours passed quickly.

I’ve suffered from migraines since I was pretty little so I completely sympathize. The majority of mine are stress induced so no one to blame but myself.
Generally I get a black spot in the center of my vision as a warning and three Excedrine migraines with a cup of coffee followed by a coke can most of the time head it off. (It has taken many years to perfect this combination) I’ve tried all sorts of prescription medications all which only work for a limited amount of time.
Peppermint tea is great for me when I do have one. I also found a peppermint stick that is rubbed on my temples and neck that feels fabulous. It gives that cooling/burning affect and helps a lot.
I hope the weather doesn’t change too much for you anymore…I know how horrible they are.

I cured my migraines by using essential peppermint oil. I put some in a tissue and breathe it or, I will put some directly under my nose. I still keep peppermint oil in the house for colds/congestion, but I never get headaches anymore.
I used to pass out tissues of oil at work to anyone who had a headache. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to ease up, but after that, the headache is gone.
You can find organic essential oils online.
