All Things Yellow

January 25th, 2010

Yellow is a popular color in the garden. Personally, I prefer other colors, I have a few wild rudbeckias in the garden and a few yellow lilies and you you can’t deny the happiness they bring to their little corner of the garden. Goldenrod in the late summer and fall is as pretty as any cultivated flower and the bright yellow maple leaves in the fall are beautiful. You still won’t find me buying lots of yellow blooms for the garden.

Yellow tomatoes on the other hand are a completely different story! You really can’t beat the tastiness of a yellow tomato for eating!

What’s your favorite yellow flower? A humble native like goldenrod or black eyed susans or something more cultivated?

Yellow is the color of spring here. We have a whole wall of forsythia, plus there are the daffodils and all the other yellow bulbs that come up. And I love them all, because by that time they are the first real color (other than a few tiny crocuses) we’ve seen in months. Still a ways away from that, though. Sigh.

I’m with you on the yellow; every time I think it will work, I end up pulling it or moving it to an out of the way ‘yellow only section.’ I also feel this way about white – but both seem more tolerable as wild flowers. I am striving this year to plant an area that’s mostly shades of green with a few pops of color here and there – but not yellow, I feel like such a snob….

That collage is pretty neat! I tend to plant more dark purples and blues rather than yellow but I have added a few must have yellows to the garden. The ‘Oranges and Lemons’ Gaillardia in your photo is one I have to keep in the garden. ‘Jethro Tull’ coreopsis is another good one. Pretty soon the daffodils will be up and forsythia blooming like a vegetative sunrise!

I love daffs and sunflowers; it’s the lemons and honey and bees that really get me, though.

Coreopsis Full Moon is a terrific medium yellow that goes with everything. I love it with blue, pink and white.

I’m not a fan of yellow. I inherited a garish yellow forsythia when we bought our house two years ago. It’s still here because it’s planted alone and grown into a cascading form that my grandmother raves about. I figure I have to leave it until she gets to visit in the spring and admire it. Then it goes. It’s almost too bad. It looked fabulous decked out in its fall colors and even now it’s displaying wonderful form with its naked branches. It’s just those darn yellow spring blooms that make me cringe. Softer yellows are okay and yellows blended with another color are often pretty.

Anyway, your collage is wonderful.I’m happy to admire yellow in someone else’s garden. I especially like the shot of the coneflower.:)
