Quote of Day: Little House in the Big Woods

January 30th, 2010

Now the winter seemed long. Laura and Mary began to be tired of staying always in the house.

Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House in the Big Woods)

Winter is starting to seem long to me. We had a nice sunny warm day last week and it seemed like spring was on it’s way. We went for a nice long walk to enjoy the weather. This week we got a bunch more snow and the temps are back down into the single digits. I know we still have many more long weeks of winter, but I start getting antsy for spring once we have one nice day. Since I haven’t ordered any of my seeds yet, I should be thankful we still have so much winter left. I’ll be doing that next week after I get my taxes finished.

Do you tire of being in the house during the cold winter months?

Yes!! It had been relatively warm here for the past week or so, and BOOM, all of a sudden the temps plunged almost 30*F and we got some snow. A little taste of what’s to come, and then it was snatched away. I miss going out even for a short walk in the middle of the work day – it’s just too bone-chilling and windy to take more than a few steps. Sigh.

Ha! I just wrote a post about this! Winter in South Carolina means a lot of rain and a lot of days that raise false hopes about spring coming. So, I’m trying to focus on good things right now instead of letting the winter blahs creep in and take over. Today I’m already fighting the good fight against the blahs–I made biscuits and had them with homemade apple butter, have bread rising on the stove, and later I have an awesome trip to the fabric store planned! Not bad for a rainy winter day.

I have fond memories of my parents reading me this series. I still have the books somewhere and you are making me want to pull them out too.. especially with this long winter. For some reason I seem to be doing better this year (so far), but I am making a conscience effort. Exercise, reading, cooking, and knitting are helping tons this year.
Sending you warm thoughts.. : )

You’ll love rereading them. I’m considering buying a set for myself. My sister has our set and her girls are reading them. I think the first 3 are my favorites.

YES. Worse this year than ever, I’m afraid. Last night, A. and the MiL took the dogs on a nighttime walk up back to enjoy the wolf moon and I couldn’t go–I just can’t handle the uphill walk in the snow anymore. That was a total bummer. Being physically limited really gets to me, since I’m so active normally, and it’s even worse when it’s winter and I feel like if I don’t get out and move, I may burst a blood vessel in my brain.

Oh well. Only a few more weeks . . .

Last week it was bizarrely warm and I went outside frequently to soak up the moist air and slight smell of spring and do a walkabout in the garden/yard. It was a terrible tease but, knowing it was such, I tried to keep my spirits in check. It’s been a relatively mild, dry winter, so I suspect spring will be earlier than normal. I can’t wait, since it’s when I get the most work done and there’s almost no bugs!!

Never mind LHITBW; I just finished reading The Long Winter. Imagine six people living in a kitchen in the back of an unfinished and uninsulated store for half a year, feeding twisted handfuls of hay to the cookstove, grinding wheat in a coffee grinder, and trying to work or read by a button lamp, with rosettes of frost growing from every nail-head in the ceiling.

I’m now up to These Happy Golden Years. This is a great set of books to read during the course of a winter.

In the maritime Northwest we had the one vicious winter-veggie-killing December cold snap, and then it has been balmy ever since. The English bluebells are already four inches high, and all the trees are threatening bud-break. The red-wing blackbirds are two months early. I shudder to think of what an ill-timed frost may do to the apple crops; meanwhile I’m able to get out and do chores just exactly as if it were summer!

I am in the same climate area as risa b above – maritime pacific northwest. We had a wicked cold period in December and then went into a January that after tomorrow will be the warmest January on record for our area – ever. It’s not exactly balmy or anything but we had ZERO days of below 32 degree temps in the month of January.

While I am definitely done with winter, I happen to live in an area where you can be outside late into the fall and very early in the spring. I take advantage of that and do a tremendous amount of season extending so that my break from gardening is less than 2 months in duration in most years (December and January)..

Most definitely, yes! It’s especially difficult because the winter weather limits the amount of time the kids spend outside. I’d really like to send them outside more often – especially after I saw a video on outdoor kindergartens in Europe. They talk about there being no bad weather only bad clothing which I suppose is part of the problem.

I still can’t wait for Spring, though.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
But we have no snow, only occasional fog. Thankfully, we’ve had rain this year.

Some days I get tired of being inside more often and I long for a good walk in the park. But then with all the hassle of bundling up in winter gear and then still feeling chilly when I’m outside, I start to remember why I initially liked being indoors so much in the first place! I’d stay inside all winter, given half the chance!

That snow is beautiful but yes I can imagine it gets tiring after a while. When I lived in Minnesota I remember actually getting out and exercising in the snow as much as possible, i.e. cross country skiing.

I just got my Seed Savers Exchange catalog…I’m already stoked for summer!
