Quote of the Day: Hal Borland

February 16th, 2010

I really enjoy living in an area that has four distinct seasons. I grew up in South America where we had a dry season and a rainy season, and there wasn’t much difference between them except the amount of rain. Here in NE Ohio we have winter, spring, summer, and fall. It’s hard to pick a favorite, I really enjoy them all. Each one has it’s beauty and it’s difficulties, but it’s nice to experience them all.

What seasons do you have in your neck of the woods? Do you have a favorite?

My very favorite season is fall. But I have to say, I enjoy them all, especially at the beginning of each.

I’ve always lived where there are 4 distinct seasons (except for a year in TN where “winter” is more like a very long “fall” in my mind) and I can’t imagine myself living anywhere that *didn’t have seasons. I love the changing of the seasons so very much! I’m not sure what I’d consider my favourite. it used to be fall, but then I started gardening and spring is an equal to fall. Summer is wonderful because of the speed of growth and the early harvests; winter is beautiful and a lovely time to nest.

It’d be easier to pick a favourite star in the sky.

I have lived most of my life in areas that have four very distinct seasons. Now I am in a slightly milder area and the winters – while there – are not so distinct as my previous history. Given that winter is my least favorite season, I am okay with that.

We are in the transition from late winter to early spring. Buds are swelling, the rhubarb is sending up new emergent growth, and some of the early bulb flowers are sending up shoots and even some flowers.

Hands down, my favorite season is fall. After a hot, sticky, humid Alabama summer, fall is so refreshing. The glowing colors of Autumn are among my favorite hues, and there’s nothing like that first cold snap that allows you to build the season’s first fire. Apples cider, jack-o-latterns, corn mazes… need I say more? :) Melissa

That’s beautiful! We need that promise of spring this year in Maryland with our record breaking snow fall. It was a blessing to walk to the barn this AM and find only a dusting….my prayer was answered….”dump it on someone else please, I’ve developed enough endurance.”

As my new seedlings burst through I’m reminded that to everything there is a season!

This year, we’ve actually had a winter, with everything but the snow, and lemme tellya, Floridians get whiny about the cold when it sticks around past the holiday season. I was raised in CT, so I look forward to pulling out the heavier outerwear. But I’ll always be a sucker for autumn, and I look forward to moving to a place where the trees change color in October instead of January again.

Here in the UK I would have to say that summer is my favourite time, only because it is the only time we get a few hours sunshine!

I live in a Mediterranean climate, and there isn’t really the distinction in the seasons. It feels like fall and spring last about a month each. It’ll be pleasantly warm and green for about a month, before weather gets into the 90s and 100s and everyone retreats to their ACs, pools or the rivers and lake nearby. I don’t mind the weather here in Sacramento, but I have never lived in a place with true “seasons”.

Here in Sacramento we’re a short drive to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I wouldn’t mind living a little bit up the hills where you get a little bit of snow, and the summers are a little bit cooler.

None of my family is originally from here. We’re all from the L.A. area. When my Grandpa drove through Sacramento in the late 70s or early 80s, he said “Why the hell would anyone live in this place? It’s too goddamn hot!” We’re definitely an area that is dependent on our ACs.

We’re deep into spring in Bakersfield, CA. Winter was perhaps 2 weeks.

Love the quote. I cut and pasted it as my facebook status…hope you don’t mind. We have 4 seasons here in Maine and I love them all as you do. The transition from season to season is always so exciting. Can not imagine living in any other area.
