Lovely Hellebores

April 3rd, 2010

I’ve always wanted to have some hellebores or ‘Lenten Rose’ in my gardens. They’re fascinating plants, perennials that bloom at a time when usually only bulbs are blooming. Last year I finally bought one from my friend Scott from Working Gardens when I went to his plant sale last spring. I’ve been waiting for them to bloom. I was super excited 2 weeks ago when I noticed the blooming getting ready to come out.

Then last week they came out beautifully. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of green flowers, and this is one of my new favorites.

I’m always happy to find a plant that thrives in shady gardens. Since I have so much shade I like to find things besides hostas that I can include in my gardens, which is kind of funny since I have a friend that loves hostas of course has a super sunny garden and wishes he had more shade so he could grow more hostas. I can’t wait to get a few more hellebores for my gardens.

Do you have any newly acquired plants you really like?
or don’t like?

Nothing new here but Helleborus everywhere because the damn deer don’t eat it! Seriously, I have dozens of self-seeded plants that should be thinned and if we could arrange something when I visit my mother, I’d love to pass some along.

I’m hoping mine seed down. I too need deer resistant plants, so I’m happy when that trait coincides with something I love. Contact me when you’re coming through, I’d love some hellebores from a friend.

I have bluebells all over my garden – carpets of bluebells in woodlands in England is not to be missed, it looks so fae. What I do NOT like however are grape hyacinths (go figure as they and bluebells almost look alike). I’m not sure what it is about them I can’t stand, but I’ve ripped them up all over my back garden and only allow them in the front as there’s just too many of the things.

I too need deer resistant plants so this one will be fun to locate, plant, and hopefully grow in my garden. A favorite plant of mine is the geranium. They just scream summer and look so inviting on the front porch (I have to over winter mine in the basement or they turn to mush). Scented geraniums are a favorite as well … they give off such a pleasant scent just by brushing up against the leaves.

There are so many flowering plants I like, I can’t choose one as my favorite. Dutch Tulips, Sunflowers and Hollyhocks are a few flowering plants I like.

Susy, if you like green flowering plants, have you ever tried Bells of Ireland. They are interesting to look at, great as a cut flower, and reseed themselves every year.

I tried growing some last year and they did ok. I’ll probably try some again this year. I didn’t have great germination, I think I’ll try seeding directly in the garden this year.

I do love hollyhocks as well.

I really like Peony and I really dislike Iris. Iris are definitely beautiful, but they have such a sickening sweet smell. It almost nauseates me.

I agree, I can’t do very fragrant flowers like: lilacs, lilies, hyacinths, paper whites, etc. They make me nauseous and give me headaches.

I’ve never heard of the Lenten Rose, but I’m definitely taking notes. Shade is something I have quite a bit of!

Im not sure where i bumped into your blog but Ive been enjoying it and your pictures. Just wanted to say hi! I love hellebores too. such a nice sight in the spring! I used to work in a nursery and I would often say “oh I love that plant, its my favorite…” and then turn a corner and exclaim “oh but that one is so nice too….” gardeners are a fickle bunch!
