Our Little Pond

May 22nd, 2010

The little pond in the garden is really starting to come together. We installed it a two weeks ago and last weekend we got some fish for it. We spent a day this past weekend planting some hostas, hakone grass and goat’s beard around it. I still have some rocks to place around the front edge and I need to find a few small plants around the garden to finish off the front part and then it will be done!

I was hoping to work on it yesterday but spent the entire day at my mom & dad’s house. I still worked in the garden, just not my own. I worked the edible garden over there, weeding the onions and planting a few more potatoes. I also dug up some lilies, mallow, and fennel to plant over here and I got some cuttings from their neighbor’s hydrangea vine. I’m giving my mom a few of our shrub roses in return.

Even though the pond isn’t finished, the fish seem to be really enjoying it. We thought a few of them had been eaten by coons, but we’ve counted all 10 in the past few days. We put a few big rocks in the bottom and a few smaller ones around the edges to give them a place to hide. If all ten are alive in a month or two we will move 5-6 of them to one of my parents big ponds, our tiny pond won’t support 10 fish.

We’re enjoying having the pond in the garden. We can see it from the bedroom window and from the front porch. I’m always stopping to watch the fish as I’m out and about doing chores. They’re very relaxing and soothing. I’d encourage everyone to install a small water feature in their gardens!

Have you ever thought about installing a small pond in your garden?

we did. the fish were all dead the next morning. A raccoon or something ate them all. It was actually sad. Of course, my kids had named the fish and everything : (

Of course I just fished a dead one out this morning. But the other 9 are still swimming around, let’s hope they continue to do well.

I still think it’s funny that we both put in ponds at the same time. I’m loving mine! If i can just keep the chickens from drowning themselves in it… the fish are happy, but tiny. Wishing i’d gotten larger ones. Hopefully they live long enough to grow up a little. I’ll be posting the updated pond next week: not as pretty as yours, but cute in its own way. i put rocks under the edge instead of over – so it still looks like a raised thing instead of a natural pond like the planter/tub thing did.

It is rather funny. We can tell that some of ours are growing already, we have a 2-3 larger ones and the rest are rather small. My parents have some pretty big Koi in their pond. I’ve read that fish will grow to the size of the pond they’re in.

Good to see they’re doing well! I wonder how big they will grow – they do see happy & healthy!

I have a small pond that I dug by hand, I love it. Never kept fish tho, it is too small, but every year salamanders and frogs appear. I have a lovely waterlily that winters over in the pond, even here in the cold (zone 4) north county. Unfortunately I recently had to have the line from my well to the house replaced. All the excavating wrecked the garden around the pond and caused some disruption to the pond itself. Plus the liner has a slow leak. So, one project for this summer is to re-work the pond, and probably make it bigger!

My parents keep expanding theirs each year. They’re so nice to have in the garden.

I am not sure if you saw about two weeks ago but we put in a water feature (fancy term for pond…hahahaha) at Odom’s Idle Acres and are using a solar powered pond pump. Check out the video at http://www.youtube.com/anotherkindofdrew

We are in love with it and are going to be getting just a couple small gold fish this week to add.

Susie that looks as beautiful as everything you do. I hope they don’t get taken out by critters!
