A Day at The Cabin
When I was a little girl my grandparents bought some land and built a cabin on it. We spent almost every weekend down there playing in the field, running through the woods, building dams in the creek and being immersed in nature. We loved the “Briar Patch” as it is called!
Yesterday we spent the day at the Briar Patch with my parents and my sister & brother-in-law and their kids. (If you remember this is the place Lucy got injured). We’re starting a whole new generation of weekends at the cabin.
The kids had a full day of archery, playing in the sand box, hiking and of course finding feathers, rocks and bones in the woods.
You can’t spend a day at the cabin without some roasting a few hot dogs over the fire (and sometimes marshmallows as well). Usually the day is finished with a batch of homemade ice cream, but yesterday we had cheesecake.
All-in-all it was a fun day. It’s always good to spend time with the family in a place that already has so many great family memories.
Did you have a place growing up where you could be immersed in nature?

Hi. Looks like your cabin is a wonderfully fun retreat. Have fun with your kids and gardening. Poor Lucy.

Yes! In the 60s, my grandpa built a cabin in Big Bear in California. He passed on before I was born, but our family has enjoyed the cabin for several generations now. Since I never met him, I always feel closest to him when I’m there, knowing every beam was put in place by his hands.

A cabin in Lake Tahoe, California. The lake, the beaches and the forest. It just can’t be beat.

I think it’s fantastic your family has a place like this. We never had a cabin, but we made many trips to different areas when I was a kid. One was a provincial park called Elk Island that has massive amounts of bison roaming around free (which of course instilled a great love of bison in me from a young age). The other is a town called Drumheller, a fascinating area in the badlands which huge deposits of fossils (which instilled in me a love of digging in the dirt). Funny how those things stick with you all your life.

I grew up in the middle of nature so that part was easy…but I remember all of the kids who lived in Pittsburgh would come to my home town to get their nature fix…I never really understood until I moved to the city…I get it now!

Hi Susie! Winona Lake Indiana was my magical summer retreat during my childhood. I spent every summer there. It is so precious to look back on it now and realize just how lucky we were to be so safe and secure that we could literally leave the house bright and early in the morning and return at dinner with no worries for our safety. We played by the lake, in the creek, at the frog pond and chased the ducks. There is nothing more wonderful than just exploring the outdoors as a child. i am sad to think that my children don’t have as much luxury to do those things these days. I hope to write a book about my experiences to give them a glimpse of what it was like. I still hold onto the hope of buying a small lake cottage and creating our own memories for Andrew and Emma. Your blog is such a reminder to enjoy what God has given us. To take a step back and really appreciate all that nature offers whether it be through food, plants, animals or each other. Thank you for giving us those reminders!

I know, we spent the days running through the woods, picking berries and being children, no worries. Too bad so many children don’t have something like that any more.
