Picking Sour Cherries
Sour cherries are in season here in NE Ohio at the moment. My parents have a small cherry tree on their property that produces more than they need, so they let us pick. Mr Chiots picked about a gallon of cherries on Saturday when we were over for a visit.
My sister & brother-in-law are renting a small plot of land for their garden and it has a big sour and a big sweet cherry tree. We may pick some of those later this week if they don’t need them all.
I love sour cherries. They make delicious pies, cobblers and are fantastic with ham. I think my favorite way to enjoy them is in cherry almond scones. Looks like we’ll have a good amount of cherries tucked away in the freezer for delicious winter scones and cobblers.
Sweet or sour, what’s your favorite kind of cherry?

I dont care for cherries. When I was 10 I was helping to pick Black Cherries from my uncles orchard, well… I happened to put more cherries in my mouth than in the bag, and I was never so sick in my life. To this day the smell of cherries makes me ill.

Black cherries are a favorite, but I really like all cherries. Last year I didn’t get to have any because the weather ended the season here, but this year looks very promising, and its off to my local farms to get a stock of cherries to freeze and use in different ways.
Sour cherries have never been popular in my home, and I think I follow that trend. I do like other tart/sour fruits (raw cranberries for example) but sour cherries never excite me. Oh well.
Do you have ideas for cherry recipes?

We love eating fresh cherries as a treat. The tree we planted this year has only a couple of cherries on it and it is likely that the birds will get those. I will be picking at my parents and brother’s this year, they don’t use all theirs.

I’m with Amy, definitely sour. You can do so much with them, sweet or savory. I hope we have a good crop here in a couple of weeks; I’m dying to try smoking ’em.

Smoking them is such an interesting idea. I’m dehydrating most of mine this year.

I’m not sure I’ve ever tasted a sour cherry before, but I do remember the sweet black cherries from my childhood. This Spring we planted a Bing Cherry and a Van Cherry tree. We read that you’re supposed to have two different kinds for proper pollination. Does anyone know if we should expect to start getting cherries next year or if it will take longer? I can’t wait!

We got just a few cherries on our trees this year and we planted them last year. Next year should be a good year, not tons, but a few quarts perhaps.

I am with Jaspenelle I LOVE Rainer Cherries. We planted both a bing and a rainer cherry this year. You really don’t get much of a crop until about the 5th year but enough for some good snacking after the 3rd year.

My Montmorency sour cherry is just about the only fruit I’ll be picking this year (everything else froze). I dehydrate just about all of my crop. I think they taste like craisins – the sweetened and dried cranberries. I usually make a batch of cherry-flavored vinegar to use in summer salads, or to add a splash to a glass of ice water, too.

I love both. We have three sour cherry trees that look like they’re going to produce a lot of fruit this year.

Sour cherries are my favorite, I find the sweet ones don’t taste at all like cherries should. We can’t get enough sour cherry jam, must make more this year.

[…] the oven, I used my tried and true recipe. I also make some tart cherry cobbler with some cherries Mr Chiots picked this past summer and we stowed away in the freezer. During the summer it can be tough to take the time to freeze […]
