Drink to Your Health

June 19th, 2010

Mr Chiots and I try to be very healthy and I’m always trying to find ways to layer more nutrition into our diets. I’m typically a water drinker, not really enjoying much else as far as beverages go. I have no trouble drinking hot tea in the winter, but I’m not a huge fan of cold beverages. Lately, however, I’ve been trying to drink more iced teas in order to add more vitamins, minerals, trace elements and antioxidants to my diet.

So far this summer I’ve been enjoying iced organic black tea, organic chai tea and all kinds of organic herbal teas. There really isn’t anything much better than a glass of tea after spending a few hours in the garden. I buy all of my tea from Mountain Rose Herbs. One of my favorites is the ‘Seasons of Discomfort’ tea, an herbal tea made specially to help with allergies. Drinking glasses of this while working outside helps me not have as much trouble with the allergies from all the pollen.
Bulk organic herbs, spices and essential oils. Sin
I must disclose that they give me a small percentage of what you purchase if you click through the links on my blog. But never fear, I’d never recommend something if I didn’t buy and love myself. I order all of my spices, herbs and teas from Mountain Rose Herbs as well as most of my face wash and face oil.

What’s your favorite cold summer beverage?

Republic of Tea Fair Trade Ginger Lemon Grass Green Tea. Great iced and I don’t add a thing. I’ve made a jar this morning and now I’m off to the market in hopes of finding more of the excellent organic strawberries I picked up last Saturday and maybe the first of the local cherries…
    Keep cool, M.

Mountain Rose is about a mile from here. They took up a row of failed businesses in a strip mall and provide much-needed employment in our neighborhood. Very good people.

I like to walk through the garden and pick a lettuce leaf here, bok choi leaf there, peppermint leaf here, and whatever moves me, then bring them in, rinse, add stevia leaves, liquefy in the blender, pour through a coarse strainer, and drink. Very refreshing, say I!

I make an orange spice/black leaf tea combo with very little sucanat that I find quite delicious……I also add orange mint leaves…….very refreshing….

Another drink that is not healthy but wonderful is this……..one liter of ginger ale and one can of frozen concentrate lemonade……mix together slowly(the whole acid/carbonation thing can be explosive :)…..you can add lemon thyme or mint(in ice cube form) or whatever floats your boat….lovely……

Seltzer, lots of ice, sometimes with mulberry juice, sometimes without.

I have lately been taking one tea bag plus one lavender sprig in a coffee cup filled with water, heating it in the microwave, then pour over ice. Very refreshing.

I love Stash’s mango passionfruit tea iced.

Also just some mint leaves and sliced lemons in water. Or sometimes with cucumber too.

I’m going to try the lavender sprig, Michelle — I love lavender (ummm, had lavender ice cream last night!).

Iced tea w/ mint and either lemon, or whatever kind of juice I may have. Last week, I canned peaches and had some leftover peach juice and used that in my tea! It was great.

My favorite teas, both hot or cold were from Hina’s (very exotic)Teas in Sacramento, CA. Unfortunately there became a legal dispute between Soni Hina and the owner of the building so both the in-store and online business is no more. Best teas ever. So, so sad.

Iced white tea…simply my very favorite summer beverage. Now the hitch is that it has not been even slightly summer like here…sigh. Kim

I love ice tea with agave nectar to sweeten it. My favorite brew combines several bags of whatever regular organic black tea is affordable and one bag of Stash peach black tea. I also adore Numi tea’s Indian Night (vanilla black tea.)

Have you tried many herbal teas?

I do love herbal teas. I grow & dry many and throughout the winter experiment with various mixes of them. I also love many from Mountain Rose Herbs.

In the morning to you and Mr Chiots!

We drink green tea with lemon grass year around, but less in the summer. This season we discovered Rickeys, lime juice with soda water (with or without gin). It makes good use of the Bearss lime juice from last season that we froze in lime cubes.
