On My Windowsill
I’m enjoying seeing big beefsteak tomatoes sitting on my kitchen windowsill just waiting to be sliced up for a meal.
This is a lovely ‘White Beauty’ tomato, we’re also eating ‘Sub-Arctic’, ‘Chianti Rose’, and ‘Cherokee Purple’. No ripe ‘Brandywine’ tomatoes yet, I can’t wait for one of those, I think it will still be a few weeks. We enjoy them sliced, drizzled with a little olive oil and topped with some freshly ground salt (Himalayan pink salt at the moment).
What’s your favorite way to eat fresh tomatoes?

Back when I could eat tomatoes, my mother and I would take a Beefsteak, split it in half (half for her, half for me), then dip the cut sides down onto a plate of salt, and eat.
Nowadays, that simple act would make good horror movie content!
Also, once in a while Mom would gather all the green tomatoes up, bring them in, slice them up, and dip the slices in cracker crumbs, then fry them. We’d have a fried green tomato snack.
Also (again), when Mom was in a beer mood, she’d pour a glass of beer, and squeeze a tomato into it. Poor man’s Bloody Mary, maybe?

When I was a kid I used to eat them sliced with sugar sprinkled on. I still do that sometimes and I still love it.

Our windowsill is loaded with tomatoes too. No Brandywines for us either. They are slow. Lots of Sub-Artic Maxi’s…but none of them are ripe yet.
We have been eating lots of Hungarian Pink Hearts…which are a beef steak tomato and so good. Also, Purple Calabash and Oxheart.
A toasted tomato sandwich is my favourite way to enjoy a tomato. Hot buttered toast, lots of butter and yummy salted tomatoes. Mmmm. I think I need to go and make one right now.

I was just saying today that I could live all summer long on ham, swiss and tomato sandwiches. (Very little ham and swiss, mostly tomato) I also sometimes just cut them up in bite size chunks in a bowl, add a tiny bit of mayo (just enough to sort of make a sauce with the juices) and sprinkle on some garlic salt. Yummmm…..

i like the little cherry tomatoes just as they are. I love the pop the skins make when you bite them (the same way I love peas :o)
For bigger tomatoes I wish I lived in a hot country where I could lay them out on trays on my roof to dry out in the sun!

I’ve been eating my heirloom tomatoes sliced and topped with fresh sweet corn (cut from the cob), a little sheep cheese, oil and vinegar. Delicious!

Mine usually get eaten right where I’m standing – still warm from the sun.
I made chili this week with some of my own toms, and I was so chuffed to be able to do that!

There is nothing like home grown tomatoes! I’m with you in simplicity being best. I also use Himalayan pink salt and I found some great varieties of organic peppercorns at Sustainable Sourcing https://secure.sustainablesourcing.com so I have been seeing how they all taste differently on sliced tomatoes. I’m thinking I better run out to the garden and pick some right now!
