Friday Favorite: Breakfast Edition

November 12th, 2010

Mr Chiots and I are simple breakfast eaters. Most often our breakfasts consist of toast, scones, zucchini bread or something along those lines in the summer. In the winter we love a steamy bowl of soaked oat groats with nuts and cinnamon and perhaps a drizzle of maple syrup (here’s my post about that). Of course the main foundation to our breakfast is a big cup of coffee, which I talked about on my first Friday Favorite. About once a week though, we enjoy a big hearty breakfast.

There’s nothing better than bacon, eggs, potatoes and onions fried in the bacon grease, some buttered toast, and of course coffee. The eggs come from a local farm (can’t wait to have my own), this bacon is from Bisson Family Meats in Maine and it’s great, the potatoes are homegrown and the bread is homemade. This is my most favorite breakfast. Many people would choose pancakes or french toast as their favorite breakfast, but I’m not a sugar in the morning kind of person, I need protein and salt in the morning.

What’s your favorite breakfast?

My all time favorite is pretty simple. I love poached eggs on toast. Of course the eggs must come from my hens and the toast needs to be my homemade whole wheat with a slice on the side slathered in my homemade triple berry jam.

My all time favorite is left over pizza but absent that your plate of eggs etc looks pretty darn nice.

My favorite breakfast would be eggs fried over medium and fried potatoes with onions and garlic power. I might fix this breakfast once a month but it always hits the spot. If I really want to go to the max I’ll add some sausage. It’s not exactly a heart healthy kind of breakfast but I only fix it once or twice a month. The only thing that comes from the Urban Ranch is the Yukon Gold potatoes.

    Have a great breakfast day.

Homemade granola, its simple, quick and keeps me going all morning. We have “breakfast” dinners, like the one in your photo every couple of weeks for our evening meal, mmm.

We love this for an evening meal as well on occasion. We usually eat a meal of this variety twice a week, if we miss breakfast, we eat it for dinner.

I’m with you, I much prefer a savory breakfast over a sweet one. My two favorites are really GOOD corned beef hash with poached eggs or Eggs Benedict.

Favorite breakfast…..fried eggs, fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy…..The meat varies…it could be bacon, goetta, ham or some type of sausage….And of course coffee….We too will do this as an easy supper…..
We have chickens, a garden, our own pork and make our own bread…..with honey from our bees…..It is very satisfying and comforting to be able to write that statement and to live it…..I hope you will get your chickens very soon…..I count them among my greatest joys…..
Thanks Susy for Friday favorites….It makes one slow down and think about the things they are thankful for…..:)

My favorite breakfast is a lot like yours. I love to do my eggs scrambled, often with some kind of veggie sauteed in, like mushrooms or onions, although there is also something really delicious about the simple taste of plain eggs. I had a sage plant that produced prolifically, so for a while, I was putting dried sage in nearly everything, and found that the flavor complements eggs really nicely.

For a while this summer, we were eating breakfast nearly entirely from our own property. Eggs from our chickens, potatoes from our garden, and sausage from our pigs. It was delightful. I’m not kidding myself that we’re self-sufficient, since the chickens and pigs eat purchased feed, and the seed potatoes came in the mail, but still… it was really nice.

I’m getting a backyard flock of chickens in a couple months. Are you planning on getting some?

My wife and I make a wonderful (not-too-sugary) vegan french toast topped with whatever fruit is coming from the garden. Ripe banana takes the place of the egg and while we used to love the traditional french toast, we like this one even better.

When I was still going to school and during my college years my total favourite would be a full-bran toast with dairy butter and orange-marmelade, a toast with full-fat yellow chees (Gouda, living in Holland) and a very big bowl of ceylon- / Lapsang Souchong (smoked) tea, after a cup of strong coffe with fullfat milk to get the juices flowing.
Nowadays I find it hard to get anything past my teeth before I’ve been up for an hour or so, but lately I’ve been contemplating re-instating the old habit.
However, the marmelade seems to sweet now, not a hint of BANG ! it seemed to have in those days… Maybe I should make my own ? Any suggestions ? Include ginger maybe ?
And the cheese… well, that’ll sort itself out since I’ve gotten the habit to buy REAL cheese on the market once a week, instead of the plastic types from the supermarket…

Maybe I shouldn’t have called it my all time favourite, more af a perfect every-day diesel-engine that never failed to do the job… Because all of a sudden the sometimes summer-concoctions of diverse fruits with cottage-cheese or yoghurt and some mueslï and honey or brown sugar and maybe a (bran) toast with ccchardboiled egg and mayonaise suddenly sprung to mind…

I think breakfast is my favorite meal. EXCEPT coffee! I can’t stand it. I can barely tolerate the smell of it. I don’t even like it with chocolate and that’s saying something.
My favorite two standard breakfasts are breakfast tacos (bacon with eggs scrambled in the grease with chopped up scallions and a little sharp cheddar wrapped in a flour tortilla) and a fried egg sandwich (whole multigrain toast, bacon and a greasy fried egg).
But I love almost all protein based breakfasts – huevos rancheros, french toast with sausage, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, homemade version of an egg mcmuffin. Not so much in love with cereals or granolas. Lately I’ve been learning to love a (soaked) steel cut oatmeal cooked with craisens and topped with a dollop of orange marmalade.
We also often do breakfast for dinner.

Thank you for the opportunity to win the seeds! I’m so excited – I can’t wait until they get here. Thanks again and again!

YUM! We have breakfast in much the same way… most days muffins, banana nut bread, granola, and ALWAYS a cup of raw milk and coffee, too. But we do love to have a big breakfast on the weekend, or in the evening sometimes. Who says you can’t eat eggs and bacon at night? ; )

After a breakfast like the ones described here, I would have to lie down to take a nap! My breakfast consists of a glass of water, a mug of tea and a cup of coffee and a bowl of fruit salad.

The only thing that might make that breakfast better would be a couple of slices of juicey red tomato. I’m waiting to hear that hens have arrived at Chiots Run:)

I can’t wait for hens either, I have to figure out a way to hide them, they’re illegal here in our allotment. They don’t really enforce the rules unless the neighbors complain and neither of mine would car. I think I can hide them easily enough.

Typically yogurt or a homemade cereal. But yesterday I had a burrito with some refried beans I made. I’m a little weird.

Not weird at all, I would eat beans for breakfast. It’s actually kind of weird that we have “breakfast” foods that are different from other meals, I mean you eat for nourishment, what does it matter what you eat at what time of the day?

Great post! I am split in my favorites – either steel cut oats with dried fruit, cinnamon and cardemon or a full, special brekky just like the one you described.

Got an extra plate? I’ll have some of what your having!

Typical breakfast fare is good, but I’ll eat leftovers from dinner the night before and call that good too. Not picky as long as I have coffee in the morning.

This is definitely my kind of breakfast! I definitely prefer the savory to the sweet end of things. Even if I indulge in pancakes or waffles, I still like to have at least something not sweet, like eggs or potatoes. My mom always makes hashbrown casseroles and farmer’s egg breakfasts. So good!
