Honk for Christmas
One of the things I love about this time of year is the Christmas lights. Since it gets dark so early, it’s nice to be able to enjoy the brightness they bring. I particularly love seeing the different kinds of decorations, sometimes they’re vintage and classic, sometimes classy and new, often around here they’re over the top, but they’re always fun and cheery!
Mr Chiots and I always take an evening, make some hot chocolate and drive around to look at Christmas lights, it’s a fun and enjoyable way to spend an evening. It’s a tradition my family started when I was young. My college girlfriends and I would always “honk for Christmas” when we saw a display we particularly loved, it made those long drives to Chicago at Christmas time more bearable and now Mr Chiots and I do the same thing.
What kinds of light displays do you like to see? Do you have any crazy over the top houses in your neighborhood?

I love twinkly lights, I just try to take them in everywhere I drive and walk all through the season. This year we went to Brookside gardens for a beautiful winter lights walk. We shared this experience with 8 adults and 6 kids. I’ll be posting photo’s tomorrow of their fabulous display. Have a very merry Christmas!

We keep our decor pretty simple…the tree, of course, and some years outdoor lights. We have two streets in our neighborhood…Candy Cane Lane and Lollipop Lane…they are parallel to each other and EVERY house lights up. And not just a string of lights on the gutter. We’re talking LIGHTS UP. I think they may even have it in the HMO papers that you MUST decorate for the holidays if you want to live on those streets!! We take a drive down those streets each year…and I usually take the boys driving around to look at lights, too. One year we stopped for an ice cream cone and then drove around to look at lights. I was eating my cone and looking at lights…talking to the boys and oohing and aahing…when all of a sudden I got pulled over! The officer aske if I’d been drinking becuase apparently I was swerving! LOL! “No officer…I haven’t had a drink in 5 years.” SO funny…the boys were in shock!

I would love to drive by a place like that.

Yes! It’s tradition for us to pack up the dog and a thermos of hot chocolate for a short trip over to the town next to ours. There is a street much like the one Michelle describes above where there is a line of cars that begins a good half mile from the cul de sac entrance. People either walk the street or stay in their cars and slowly cruise it. Nearly every house is decked out with lights, nativity scenes, plywood Santas scaling the chimneys, trains, penguins…there’s even a snow blower! Which is a nice touch since we’re in Southern California. I really need to send a thank you note to every one on that street. It’s become very special for so many families.
