Quote of the Day: Henry David Thoreau
That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.
~ Henry David Thoreau (Walden)
My simple pleasures on a cold winter day…
…a cup of coffee in a handmade mug
…freshly fallen snow
…the morning sun peeking through the clouds
…the little bits of color you spot occasionally during the winter
…the view of beautiful sunsets unhindered by tree leaves
…I can’t forget to mention warming up the bed with an electric mattress pad, it’s so nice climbing into a toasty warm bed! (we turn it off when we get into bed, it’s too hot to leave on all night)
What are some of your simple pleasures?

A meal made entirely (or close) from what we have grown or harvested.

The sight of a chicken barreling towards you on its stumpy little legs.
A wood pile getting taller and taller.

Turning out the lights and watching my 4 German Shepherds sleep in the glow of the wood stove and then dozing off in the warmth myself with a Maine Coon cat snuggling with me.

Walks with the dog, tea, hands in dirt, chickens and their antics, germinating seeds, hanging laundry on the line, turning old t-shirts into diapers.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately… how the things I’m excited about and looking forward to are sewing new clothes from old, dividing and transplanting perennials, picking berries, etc. All things that are free or cheap. I really really like the labor of life. I take such pleasure out of growing and making things to keep us going. I am more content and I feel more wealthy than I did when I had a job and took my pleasures in buying things.

My husband’s coffee, our Aussie Shepherd, cooking big dinners in our bite-size kitchen, listening to Carla Bruni or Madeleine Peyroux as I work, and NFL football as white noise on a Sunday morning.

– snuggling under my pile of warm blankets on a weekend winter morning.
– spinning & knitting
– how my house smells when I get home from work and dinner’s in the crockpot
– wool socks that I knit myself
– laughing with my kids
– the “ping” of a canning jar sealing and the “pop” of opening it in the cold winter and knowing that “i” made it.
