Quote of the Day: Truman Capote

April 10th, 2011

In my garden, after a rainfall, you can faintly,
yes, hear the breaking of new blooms.

Truman Capote

We’ve been having a tons of rain here at Chiot’s Run, April showers is a bit of an understatement! We’ve been having so much rain that I haven’t plants peas or potatoes in the garden, it’s simply too wet. They would rot and never show their little faces.

At least all this rain is supposed to bring beautiful flowers. I’m also appreciating that all this rain has been giving me the time to dig up all those saplings to clear that new lot for the garden.

Have you been getting April Showers in your neck of the woods?

All that rain also makes the ground nice and soft for the digging of those saplings, yes?

We haven’t had a ton of rain, but we haven’t had a whole lot of sun, either. I think we’re due for your most recent storm to hit us today or tomorrow, though. Which is good, because I DO have peas in the garden, so they could probably use the rain.

I live right next door to Lake Erie so yes.. we’ve been having the same never ending rain.. I was telling someone that this is what makes NE Ohio green & lush the rest of the year so I wont complain about it..
The sun is shining right now & the temps are supposed to be near 80 today.. That is enough to warm any heart! ;)

Oh yes…lots of showers…and I happen to LOVE it! However, right before the rains began my son and I planted sugar snap peas and sunflowers…and only two popper their little heads through the soil. And then..the chickens got into the garden and ate them!

BUT…my husband and I just set posts yesterday to expand the garden…and built a pen for the chickens with a HIGH fence. So I think from here on out the seedlings should be safe. And so far the chickens seem to be enjoying their new run!

The other day was perfect for seeding brassicas under my tunnel cloches. Other than that, it’s been constant rain. Boohoo.

April showers – oh yes! Of course, I live outside Seattle so it is to be expected. Although we get a lot of rain, we have good drainage so my peas and potatoes are in the ground. In fact, all my cool weather crops are in the ground and doing ok. Except the carrots. I keep forgetting to get the carrot seed in the ground this year. Of course, today it is going to rain. Oh well, I guess I’ll plant those carrots in the rain today. ;-)

I live in Northwest Ohio and we have been having Sooo much rain as well. This is the first year I am doing a garden at my home and I have alot of spring planting to do. Hope it isn’t getting to late. I have to plant: peas, beets, carrots, and onions. I am not sure when these really need to go in?? This is definitly going to be a great learning process:)

April showers to spare here in Seattle. And useasonably cool, too. But, everything here is green, green, and lovely spring flowers in spite of the rain. We sure could use some sunshine and dry days as even my raised beds are sodden.

Yes, we are getting a lot of rain here as well. It’s a great excuse to laze around and bake I’d say.

Oh we need rain! had a bit lat week while I was gone, but only enough to put 2″ in the rain barrel – so that could hardly even be called “rain” when I have a huge huge roof all aimed at that one barrel and only filled it 2″. UGH!.People told me it rained, but I think it was more like a mild sprinkle. We haven’t had any measurable rain in over 6 months. It is SO SO dry and the rain barrels are SO SO dry. I love seeding after a rain, like you mentioned, it makes pulling this so much easier. Emily
