Friday Favorite: Galvanized Goodies
You may have noticed a few old galvanized items I use throughout the garden. There’s something I really love about galvanized things, especially olds pieces. I love that they have a history behind them, who knows what they’ve been used for throughout their lives. I have a few pieces that were my parents, two old buckets, an old trash can, and an old watering can and a few other pieces I’ve collected along the way.
I have fond memories of this watering can as a girl. I don’t use it for watering, simply for decor. I’m hoping to add more watering cans to my collection as well when I can find them.
I don’t find ‘new’ items all that often since I don’t get to go to auctions as we work often on Saturdays. I do have Mr Chiot’s grandpa on the lookout, hopefully he’ll find me some big old washtubs, maybe a double sink, perhaps more watering cans and hopefully a few nice old oscar the grouch trash cans to store all of my potting soil and vermiculite in.
Do you have anything that you collect for you garden or for gardening?

Terra cotta pieces. I love the look of the red clay. I also have a few galvanized pieces.
I also love to collect FREE plants. My husband is a roofer and when they do a job and some babies of a pretty bulb or shrub or tree are there he will ask about getting me one or two of the babies or sometimes he just gets to talking to the owner about plants and they offer some. People always say yes..that’s good ole southern hospitality. Now he doesn’t bring home something from every job or anything but when there is something there he knows I have been yearning for he will ask. Sweet guy. Yesterday he brought me home a little southern magnolia…I have wanted one for ages. YIPPEE!!!

Weeds, all shapes, sizes, and varieties. I’ve built up quite an extensive selection.

That’s a great thing to collect – cheap and fairly easy!

Like kristin has weeds – I have bugs.
I’m not a collector at all. I lean more towards being a minimizer.

I collect allium! Ornamental, edible… you name it, I’ve got it somewhere in my garden. Oh, and rabbits. Despite all efforts to “encourage” them to move along to someone else’s garden, I have amassed quite a collection under my shed. Boo.

These comments are funny..
I was going to comment on your galvanized bucket yesterday…I’ve got several that I bought at the flea market…one has holes so I use it to carry things around in. I’ve got a big tub, a medium tub and a giant watering trough that we got at a yard sale last summer for $10! I’ve also got a couple of watering cans that are currently sitting on my porch…but I’m thinking they’ll look really cute on my new garden fence posts!

When I was a kid we always kept the dog food in a galvanized trash can. They are great for storage! I like the watering can, I have thought about collecting them but I am not really a collector these days.

I collect pots, have too many of them already so I really have to control myself from getting more. For some reason it never occurred to me to get galvanized containers for gardening chores, the plastic buckets and tubs don’t last long so from now on when the time comes I’ll replace them with galvanized ones.

I couldnt help but notice the container baby lettuce seeds in that picture. I am trying then this year and in long window boxes. Have you had good luck with them? Do you start them inside or just plant outside?
I love your blog by the way. And the pictures.

I sometimes start some early lettuce indoors and sometimes outside. I have a window box with tiny lettuce seedlings right now and it seems to be growing nicely. I often grow lettuce in pots on my back porch and they always do well!

Susy, I’m a collector of nothing but most folks know I will take just about anything for gardening including concrete blocks, dirt, rocks, old lawn mowers, old barbecue grills, etc. I have learned how to turn gas grills that are worn out into charcoal burners which I think is better anyway. I have the only charcoal double decker barbecue grill with knobs on the block.
Happy tax day.
