Quote of the Day: Julian Grenfell

April 17th, 2011

The naked earth is warm with Spring, and with green grass and bursting trees leans to the sun’s kiss glorying, and quivers in the sunny breeze.

~Julian Grenfell

Spring has been a little late in coming this year to Chiot’s Run. Usually by now we’re seeing tulips and a few blooming trees. This year the daffodils have just started and the soil has just thawed enough to plant peas & potatoes. A full month after the “usual” planting time.

In spring it seems that sky is always bluer, the sunsets more golden and the grass greener than you’ve ever seen before. I definitely appreciate living in an area where each season is very distinct! I think I appreciate the warmth of the sun as much as the grass does, I feel like I grow taller with each hour I spend in the sun. Perhaps refilling my stores of Vitamin D after the long dark winter.

What do you appreciate most about the spring weather?

I can’t say I appreciate one aspect any more than any other. Just the sense of reawakening is so uplifting. Now in the morning there are a few birds singing, the air is often just a bit softer than a month ago, the snow is almost gone, everyday there is a little more green grass, it is the season of baby chicks in the basement, baby rabbits, budding trees, sun higher in the sky, peepers at night, businesses opening for the summer season and the list goes on. It was nice to spend the dark winter months snuggled down with a fire but changing gears to longer days and more outdoor time is so uplifting.

This year, it’s the fact that I can get out of the same four rooms I’ve been traversing with a toddler for months. SOOO much better to just follow along behind him as he explores outside. No entertainment required by me–just make sure he doesn’t fall in the cistern or something and he’s good.

Susy, I enjoy the smell of the air after a spring rain. I enjoy the warm sun on my face as I sit on the front patio sipping morning coffee. I enjoy watching the Robins play in the Spring rain showers. I enjoy the smell of the earth as I prepare my garden beds to plant. I enjoy the conversations with the neighbors that I see after being cooped up all winter. I enjoy working on the outside projects. I enjoy being able to select the annual plants from the nursery with anticipation of planting. I enjoy burgers on the barbie. Can you tell my favorite season it spring. I enjoy the blooming vibrant color flowers. I enjoy the trees that bloom purple (my favorite color). I enjoy driving with the window down and the wind blowing in my face. These are just a few of my favorite spring things that I enjoy.

    Have a great spring day.

It’s funny that you’re a month behind. Here in NC, we’re about 3 weeks ahead. My big clue is that our oak tree and crepe myrtles are leafing out which they never do until May.

Cool warmth and the fruit trees blooming. But that was in February.

More than anything, I enjoy the warm breeze. I don’t like feeling cold air on my skin, and the warm breeze provides such comfort for me. A great blessing after a rough winter.

I am loving the cool breezes…it’s making the work in the backyard much more enjoyable. I would imagine (not living in an area with snow) that spring is all the more magical after a season of everything being frozen beneath the ground. It’s miraculous anyway…but to see it all emerge after being frozen seems like it would be even MORE amazing!

It’s always fun to watch the birds going crazy in the garden, chasing those evil grasshoppers and other pests!
