Friday Favorite: Old School Games

April 22nd, 2011

Growing up we had an Atari gaming system. We never got beyond that, my parents didn’t buy us tons of toys. We didn’t mind though, we enjoyed playing atari for years and years. My parents still have the old Atari and the games we loved as kids. Every now and then we get it out and have some old school fun! Mr Chiots had an Atari as well when he was a kid, but he moved on to other gaming systems as they came out.

Earlier this week Mr Chiots and I went to my parent’s house and he taught our nieces & nephew how to play all our favorite games like Pacman, Barnstorming and Bowling. They had been excited about this day for a long time as we had to postpone it once already.

They certainly seemed to have a great time playing the same games that my sister and I played as a kids. No doubt they’ll be playing a lot with my dad when he arrives home later next week. He always loved playing Atari with us.

Did you ever own an Atari? What was your favorite game?

Yay Atari! My uncle gave me his when he left for the military twenty some years ago. I got it right after the first Nintendo came out. I loved to play Kaboom! with my mom. She was actually really into the old school video games, and would sit and play Atari or Super Mario/Duck Hunt with me. Fun times. :)

Nintendo all the way. We even had the floor pad controller thing in which you had to jump on the buttons. Useful for getting some semblance of exercise in Alaska when it’s 60 below zero outside. I mostly remember playing Mario Bros. I could actually beat the first game, as I recall, though I don’t know if I ever made it all the way through Mario Bros. 3. Later I had a GameBoy and I LOVED Tetris. I think I still have that GameBoy up in the barn, actually . . .

I was already grown & married when Atari came out but my mother in law got one.. I used to love to play Frogger the most on hers when I had the opportunity.. That and one of the Asteroid games.. not sure if it was actually called Asteroid or not Those are the only 2 games I even remember, but I enjoyed them both. :D
Im definitely not a gamer.. unless you call reading blogs gaming. ;)

We had an Atari when I was little, and like you, we never graduated to the other systems. Frogger was always my favorite :)

We don’t have an Atari but we did when we were kids. I loved Pac Man and this tennis game. It was so cool! Now we have an old Super Nintendo and I love to beat my kids at Mario Kart! Also love Donkey Kong!

We had an Intellivision. It was magnificent. It was glorious. I will never forget the disbelief when “rebels” popped up in the Utopia game.

Thanks for activating a great memory!

Never owned an Atari. I was a young woman when those were out and I was all about playing other games.

I just showed your post to my husband – he was quite the Atari fan and your top picture made him very happy. His favorite game was Yars’ Revenge – which he now plays on his ipod. Atari has an app with lots of their old games. Although, you have the real thing, which I’m sure is way better!

Lol- we still have DH’s Atari and about 50 games for it! And because he’s a crazy gamer, he bought new controllers for it a couple of years ago. It’s really fascinating to see what was cutting edge technology when we were 7. My personal preference is Frogger, but we have the worse game ever-ET- and that is sort of fun in a sad and pathetic way;)

We had some device that was sort of a generic Atari, I can’t remember the name of the device. We were able to play a version of Pong on a our old black and white set. The games did not have round shapes only square’s so there was also a bowling game was a bunch of white squares on a black screen that represented the pins and the ball:) We thought it was the coolest thing ever!

Oh how fun! Yes, we had an Atari and I was the queen of PacMan! Then Nintendo came out, and my brother got one, and it was Mario Brothers and other Nintendo games from then on. Isn’t it funny to look at game graphics now compared to what they were just 20-25 years ago?
