I Spy With My Little Eye…
When I was tying up my tomatoes on Monday, I noticed that a few of the plants were blooming. It’s always exciting to start seeing the lovely yellow flowers on the tomato vines. So far, only a few of the plants are blooming, the rest look like they’ll be blooming in a week or two.
I also noticed that I had a few tiny tomatoes on my ‘Tess’s Land Race Currant’ tomato. These were planted because I figured a tomato this small should provide early tomatoes for salads. I may have been right, we’ll see how long these take to ripen up.
I won’t be eating a ‘Brandywine’ anytime soon, but it looks as though I’ll be eating a tiny tomato in early July!
How’s your 2011 tomato season coming along? blossoms, fruit, harvesting any ripe tomatoes yet?

My poor tomatoes and peppers are still in recovery mode. We had a hail storm about a week ago. I have to decide quickly whether or not to replace some of them. In northern Colorado our growing season is short. But, there’s still time plant tomatoes and pepper.

Mine have recovered nicely from the hail storm we had. They lost some leaves & branches but seemed to bounce back quite nicely. They’re finally start to look lush again.

I can still only dream of real tomatoes. Nothing yet up here, though maybe some flowers in the next couple weeks.

I have unopened blossoms but that gives me hope. Hopefully once they open, the sun will come out and the bees will get busy pollinating. I expect ripe tomatoes by the second week of August.

I’ve got lots of blooms and even more baby tomatoes already on their way. I’m also looking forward to an early July harvest. Yum!

Flowers on the Stupice–always the First Tomato, which is why I always plant them. The First Tomato is always the best tomato. Tomato number 300 is not so exciting somehow. :-)

Before we left on vacation, we had blossoms on our tomato plants so who knows when we get back from vacation on Friday.

My tomatoes are just starting to bloom, too! (The ones the deer didn’t chomp off at least.) Several of mine are compost volunteers and some are from the Renee’s Garden “Rainbow’s End Heirloom Mix” which I’m trying for the first time this year. Congrats on your early tomatoes – I’m jealous! :)

Nothing ripe yet but with this current brush of heat production should be increasing.

I have fruit on some tomato plants that were started in a greenhouse at work, but all the plants I started myself at home don’t even have flowers yet. At least they look happy and healthy so far!

So encouraging! I planted some cherry tomatoes for the first time this year, and can’t believe the number of blooms already. I’ll make sure in the future to mix it up with cherries, early season and late season ones for a great harvest.

Lots of blooms on mine here in NE Ohio, but no fruits yet. Mostly Big/Better Boy-the cool heirlooms I started from seed never made it so I settled on what Wally World had to offer. Also plenty of cherry and yellow volunteers from last year’s crop. I’m a tomataholic so no matter the variety, it’s all good. Can’t wait!

I just tied up my tomato plants too. :) In my Zone 5 garden in central Ohio, I have at least one bloom on all the 11 varieties I planted. The Sun Gold cherry (the one hybrid I planted) has a few marble-sized fruit, and the Black Cherry and the Goose Creek tie for second with most blossoms. Opalka is also doing well.

I am jealous of your tomatoes! We left a lot growing at my parents before we came out to our field jobs, but I was able to check on them two weeks ago and they were doing alright.

Our first tomato plant surprised us with sudden tomato growth. We named the first one Zag-gnar. there are now 8 more starting to grow!

How exciting. Around here people hope for a tomato by the Fourth of July. Looks like you will beat that date.

It’s been SO chilly in NorCal, I was getting very worried about early blight. It’s finally started to heat up, was 85 F yesterday. I’m considered coastal by the Sunset USDA zone, but I’m on the border of inland. I’m allergic to tomatoes, and this is the first time I’ve grown them – an experiment of course, because what kind of gardener doesn’t know how to grow tomatoes?! I’ll be giving them away at work.

Sounds like you all need to move to Phoenix! I’ve been lucky enough to be harvesting tomatoes for months now! Seriously! I have a small rented home with a small yard I’m not supposed to garden in…but managed to fit in 17 tomato plants! I’ve got about 5 different varieties. I’m getting a good 40 of the little guys a day! Seriously, I’m giving them to everyone I can! The larger ones are only about 4 a day. In Phoenix we are in the height of our season and very soon these over 100 days will be too much for the plants to bear and we do all we can to just get them to live until the end of August/Sept and then they will all produce again! I love hearing everyone else’s time frames! So fun.

I got a late start on my tomatoes and I’m just going to be staking them this weekend! I started some heirlooms from seed and the first and second bunches got munched down by some little critter the first weeks, so, I ended up buying plants from the local nursery and got them in about 2 weeks ago. They look good, but still have a long way to go to fruit!
It stinks cause last year we had tomatoes in mid July!

Can you show us how you tie up your tomato plants? I am always
looking for a good idea of keeping my tomatoes off the ground.
I do plant the heirloom so they can get tall. Thanks!
