Resting up for Next Week

November 19th, 2011

As is the case with most families, things get a little hectic around here during the holiday season. It starts ramping up the week before Thanksgiving and doesn’t really slow down until after New Years. Unfortunately on top of being gone last weekend I managed to catch a cold *UGH*. I don’t sick that often, in fact it’s been two and half years since my last cold.

That being said, I’m taking the day off trying to rest up and get better since I have tons of cooking to do next week. A cup of tea and bit of rest is just what I need to be back in the game next week!

Any colds/flu in your household? What’s your favorite way to heal?

I have young ones so we have several battles with colds each year. My favorite way to get better? Sleep. Moms know that being sick is the only time we’re allowed to get all the sleep we really need!

Feel better soon! We hardly ever get sick, but when someone in my family does, it is usually on a major holiday or the day we are leaving for vacation. Tea is my drink of choice when sick.

Chicken Noodle Soup my friend. It always helps me feel better! I’m not sure if the therapy comes from making it or eating it, but both are good for me!

My daughter is the only one that has had any sort of cold/flu/bug.
She basically isolated herself and slept a lot.

I also had her taking lots of zinc, vitamin C, & vitamin D. Thats probably my biggest go to for colds, flue, bugs. Chestal syrup is great too if you are coughing & have a sore throat. Nyquil if you must to sleep.

My mother swears Sambucol helps tremendously. Its a black elderberry extract rich in immune supporting flavonoids. Its tasty anyways. ;)

I am not huge on all the antibacterial products out in commercial land but I do use hand cleaner when I’ve been in public bathrooms when there are icky germs in the work building.

I also DONT rub my face, eyes, etc with the palms of hands or fingers. Use the back of your hands if you must.
They say you get most germs from your own hands, so I’ve read.

Using a neti-pot daily is supposed to also help a lot in keeping germs out of your sinuses.. I have one but only use it in acute instances..

Hope youre feeling much better soon!

Love Chestal syrup, but I try to only take it at night if needed. I’m a big believer that you shouldn’t try to mitigate cold symptoms but let them run their course.

Neti pots are a life saver when sick and most other days too!

Sleep! Some hot tea and chicken broth help soothe the soul (and the throat), but sleep is the only way I can guarantee knocking out a cold. The body is an amazing self-healer.

Elderberry syrup, chicken broth/soup, herbal teas, and rest, C, D, and a soft tissue on the nose, (I am a woosy when it comes to my nose).
    Please get well soon,

Greek Avgolemono Soup is my answer to the traditional chicken soup remedy. There is just something about the nourishing eggs and pasta, along with the lift of a little lemon that always makes us feel better. And it is so easy to make! Even if I’m the one sick, I can whip up a batch with no trouble at all: http://tinyurl.com/cuzw4r5.

Thanks for the link, I’ve been eating a traditional Colombia breakfast soup of chicken broth, potatoes, garlic, with poached eggs in it topped with fresh cilantro & scallions. Can’t go wrong with chicken broth and eggs when you’re sick.

I don’t get sick that often either but it has been 2 years since the last time I was sick though but drank lots of tea and rested up at my computer.

We’re a tad sick here, too… strangely so. It’s like an intense flu with all the symptoms, but only lasts a day at most. (The rest still have need of many tissues, quite frequently, though!) My remedy (since rest/sleep are hard to come by in this household…) ;-) was LOTS of teas and other beverages, and a book I was wanting to read. Worked for me! Was kinda nice to have a break, too, even though I felt pretty awful. Maybe I just needed a “day off”! :-)

Hope you feel better soon. For the past couple years I have been taking Sambucus elderberry syrup as a preventative, I haven’t had a cold in the “past couple of years”. Other than that echinacea tincture and chicken broth with rice. The soup you have on Facebook looks like the perfect get better quick meal for a cold. I guessed at ingredients looking at the picture and made some for lunch ~ probably not the same, but it was very good. I had homemade chicken broth, green onions, parsley, herbal salt mix and of course an egg dropped in. It was very good. I saw on line something about a milk broth. Anyhow, it was something new and I really liked it ~ take care and get better quick!

I’ve been sick with sinus/allergies for the past week.It is awful to feel so bad and miss any nice days we have this late in the year! When I get sick,I sleep!! As often as I want!!! It seems to help me get back into working order.
Take it easy on yourself and not to worry about the holiday!! Whatever you do or don’t do will be just fine!! Take care! Darlene

I don’t get sick but today my employee’s cold/flu gave him the aching body and he begged me to work the kennel this afternoon. So while my freshly slaughtered turkey roasted, I worked at my kennel. I told him to take 3 asprin and then have a very hot shower and take a nap and then do it all over again. Most people don’t believe in my cure. Oh yes, something hot to drink is good too.

Some very terrific advice for you in the future:
Don’t pick your nose. Wash your hands.

I rarely get a cold or flu by following those sage words. But since I’m mortal & I do get sick I find that water, Lysterine, and plenty of sleep help. Eucalyptus oil in a hot shower followed by Breathe Right strips help congestion.

You’ll be feeling better before Thanksgiving.
