Quote of the Day: Little House on the Prairie

November 24th, 2011

Thanksgiving dinner was good. Pa had shot a wild goose for it. Ma had to stew the goose because there was no fireplace, and no oven in the little stove. But she made dumplings in the gravy. There were corn dodgers and mashed potatoes. There were butter, and milk, and stewed dried plums. And three grains of parched corn lay beside each tin plate.

Laura Ingalls Wilder –On the Banks of Plum Creek (Little House, Book 4)

I love the combination of what they had at this meal, simple, seasonal, and local.

One of the reasons I enjoy Thanksgiving so much, is that it’s one of the few remaining semi seasonal meals left in our culture: cranberries, turkey, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and squash. We’ll not think about the green bean casserole or the jello mold that sometimes appears on the table at some gatherings.  Whatever you happen to be eating today – enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving from Chiot’s Run.

What always interests me is the difference in seasonal foods depending on where you live. We had green beans with our meal that came out of my garden last week. We just had our first real frost last Thursday. I’ve been storing up green beans in the freezer for about a month now to have enough for thanksgiving. And my mother in law brought me two boxes of tomatoes from Florida- no frost there yet! Such difference depending on where u live! I love the diversity!

Wow–I loved the Little House books as a kid (I probably still would enjoy them on a re-read). I wonder if that explains my affinity for local, seasonal, made-from-scratch foods. Hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving.

The Little House books were my most cherished childhood books.. I loved them and read them hundreds of times over… I passed them on to a family friend many many years ago, but sometimes I wish I had kept them.. ;)

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.. Its my very most favorite holiday of all. Giving thanks for the bounty that comprises of my life, family, & friends is huge to me. I do give thanks & daily, but I love the pageantry of the yearly feast, the tradition, and the gathering of loved ones..

I love this quote! I loved The Little House books as a kid, and still today! It really does highlight the difference between that time period and today! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
