The Right Time of the Night

February 2nd, 2012

Sunsets again become events worth noting, and can be noted, for in February they begin to occur not while we are still absorbed in our daily work, but after, in the peaceful time when dinner is being gotten ready.

Joe Eck & Wayne Winterrowd in Living Seasonally: The Kitchen Garden and the Table at North Hill

Every now and then, I look out the window, and it’s the right time of the night. Earlier this week, a winter storm rolled through and plastered everything with snow. While I was cooking dinner, the skies cleared and the sunset was perfect.

I enjoy sunset more than sunrise. This is probably the case because I have no windows on the eastern side of our house and cannot see the sun rise. The sun sets on the side of our house with the most windows and I find myself often working in those rooms when it is on it’s way down. As a result, I love the sunset and the golden glow that it provides while I’m cooking in the evenings. Perhaps when I have a house with easterly windows I’ll enjoy the sunrises more than the sunsets, but for now it’s the sunset I love.

Which do you prefer, the sunrise or the sunset?

Now that I’ve had some trees removed, I love sunrise over Sargent Mountain. It isn’t an open view but I can see it and it is really lovely.

My house faces East and most windows are on the east side therefore the sunrise is my most viewed event !

We are blessed enough to have a wonderful view of both!

I like sunset. That’s usually the time I’m out in the garden, finishing up the watering and weeding. I also like watching the barn swallows circle around in the sky catching mosquitoes and the little bats flying around in their zig-zag, crazy way.

    Both :)

If I had to pick, sunrise. And that was one of the best things about living in the north – when the sun rises after 8 am all winter long, you get to see a LOT of sunrises!

I actually have a favourite place and time for sunrises: in the winter, the sun rises right over the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara. And with the ice from the mist coating all the surrounding items, it is truly beautiful.

    Gorgeous photos!
The sun is usually rising as I finish my morning walk and it’s a welcome sight. Sunsets here are pretty spectacular though. Too hard to choose!

Sunset. We have windows all across the front of the house and live on a large hill, so when the sun goes down in the summer, the orange colors all the walls inside the house. I never get tired of seeing it :)

So nice to see some pictures of snow. I just went outside at 8 am and it wasn’t even cold enough for a light jacket!!! I would like just a week of winter!

…I love Sunrises. It means I’m up, it’s a new day and I’m alive. But then I love & adore Sunsets and I would have to say that is my fav’. I love the way it plays when it comes streaming in the windows, it’s such a soft lite. And I love that it means it’s time to wind down & reflect on the day. Could that be why I love Autumn and Winter so? :o)

…And I am loving your photos! And your picket fence! I guess I gotta bad case of fence envy. *giggle* ;o)

    …Enjoy your day you two!

    …Blessings :o)

I too love picket fences and wasn’t crazy about this one when we moved in. We have actually taken down about half of it because it was installed improperly and wasn’t straight and was falling down. I do love it more now, especially in the winter as it provides interest in the garden!

We have windows West & East at our house. The sunset is just as beautiful as the sunrise. However, if I had to choose, I think it would be the sunrise as it comes up over the pasture, barns & orchard and looks just breathtaking. I have often thought about doing a seperate blog just to showcase daily photos of our sunrise!

That would be a great blog – a great way to use Tumblr!

I really love the photos. I don’t get snow or frost and I am living vicariously. You make winter look really good! I am going to get another cup of hot steaming coffee now…. and imagine.

My kitchen window faces east, and I enjoy the sunrise. However, where we live (semi-arid desert, by the Columbia River) we have spectacular sunsets, so I’d have to pick them.

It’s sunrise for me. I have a second story deck that faces east, and since my house sits higher than my neighbors, it looks out over all of the rooftops around me. I love getting up early on Saturdays when the weather is nice, sitting out on my “roof garden” (as we have dubbed it since it is littered with container plants of all shapes and sizes) and sip a cup of coffee while the sun comes up. It’s a very quiet, peaceful time…and with a busy career and two small kids, I don’t get many of those. I relish it.

Your cardinal pictures get me every time. I would so love to see one, but they don’t live in Western Washington. :(

Right? I love cardinals. They remind me of my Granny. Sadly, we don’t get any out here in California, so I have to rely on beautiful photos like these.

I dont get to see too many sunrises because Im either sleeping or already at work, most of the time. I love both though, and I have many more pictures of sunsets, but it is magic when I’m at the beach on South Padre Island and the sun starts peeking the beginning of its rays above the water at about 4:45 am.. That is my idea of heaven!

I’m a sun rise lover – it sparks excitement in me. I am lucky to get gorgeous sunsets which calm me and I can feel at peace with the world.

Our huge tree removal project this year has opened up a whole new world of sunrises – a beautiful surprise side effect. Gorgeous winter photos (although our Australian summer is almost winter this year!)
