Procrastination

April 7th, 2012

This year spring seems to have come a little early. I’ve been taking advantage by getting a lot of jobs done around the garden, but mostly they don’t really need to be done right now. Things like moving hostas, building rock walls, harvesting compost, stacking firewood, etc. I’ve been putting off some of my seed starting in order to accomplish these other things. I have a good amount of my seeds already started, brassicas, celery, onions, and some herbs. I still need to start a lot more herbs, beets, lettuce and all of my tomatoes and other warm weather crops.

I don’t know why I’m procrastinating in this area, typically seed starting is one things I’m ahead on. Perhaps it’s because I’m already out of edible garden space and am trying to figure out where I’m going to be putting all these new seedlings, I don’t really know. Perhaps I’m just finally realizing that it’s not a race and my tomatoes will most likely fruit at the same time whether I start them in March or April.

Is there a gardening chore you’ve been putting off?

Oh, yes…in fact, there’s a whole garden we’ve been putting off! My husband started removing all the broken concrete that lined our existing irregularly shaped raised beds so we can build new rectangular ones out of wood, and stalled. We have several more tractor-buckets of concrete to remove, then all the weeds and things (common oregano – HATE it!) before we can build and plant. Luckily, last frost in our area is May 15th, so we have a little time.

I’ve been putting off cleaning the debris from our now-depleted woodpile, and repairing the fence behind it so the deer can’t get into my vegetable garden. The wood was blocking the way, but now that we’ve used it all, I’m feeling exposed!

Weeding. I hate it. And, it needs to be done. This weekend is the weekend, although I’m pretty sure the Easter Bunny is hoping to have all those weeds to hide eggs in. Yea, I’m pretty sure about that.

I got my tomato plants started right about the right time, but I procrastinated something awful regarding my peppers (they’re done now) and still havent done the herbs & greens I want to. I have everything I need to get finished on my kitchen table but I just keep procrastinating. I probably will do it today though since I want to get my table cleared off for Easter dinner tomorrow afternoon..

We also have a large pile of tree & bark that is composting in the front yard that we need to do something with one of these days. There was a very large & beautiful tree there but it died out & m’honey had a guy come by with a stump grinder after it was cut down and it made a huge pile that has diminished in size over the years. I keep thinking I’ll take it around to my little shade sanctuary and use as mulch but I may be building a little garden about where its located now so maybe I’ll just leave it be. ;)

Oh my. there are so many things I keep putting off. The big one is letting the lettuce continue to grow and have put off planting zucchini in order to let the lettuce go to seed. Will soon just get impatient and pull lettuce (I do have more seeds) and get the zuc seeds in. OR I will plant the zuc seeds in one of the flower or herb gardens. Somehow it will work. I hope it works out for your tomatoes – I am sure it will, your weather is a bit more forgiving than mine. Unfortunately, the difference of planting tomatoes in March vs April makes a huge different in my neck of the woods. If I wait too long on those it will be way to blazin’ hot for them and no tomatoes for me.

Susy you must be the gardener least prone to procrastination in the whole world! You get so much done, it’s amazing. But I’ve been putting off sowing my sunflowers and summer squash: need to do that today. I’m sowing some easy veg for a friend who has a roof garden in central London too. The aim is to get her hooked!
