Friday Favorite: The Garden in April
April is that month here in my zone where everything seems to burst forth overnight. The tiny seedlings start to grow quickly, the flowers start to come out and almost all the plants start putting up new growth. I’ve truly been enjoying spending time outside this week, I think I’ve spent a few hours every single day, some days I’ve been able to spend 5-6. Here’s what my garden looks like right now:
The dogwood blooms opened up earlier this week and they’re quite nice. Not as prolific as they were last year, it seems they look especially great every other year and last year was their year. The front flowerbed is brimming with color and exuberant growth. I love to see it come to life after being kind of sad and bleak all winter long.
Things are coming right along in the edible garden as well. The garlic is looking fantastic, the first sowing of beets are coming up, the golden peas in pots on the front porch will be climbing their supports soon, and the strawberries are blooming prolifically.
I’m also super happy that the wrens returned yesterday. Mr Wren spent the morning serenading me while I weeded! The weather has been really great this month, though a tad on the dry side. I’m certainly not complaining after last spring when it was so wet I could barely get a few hours outside. I’m looking forward to what this coming gardening season brings; no doubt successes and failures, should be interesting!
How does your garden grow in mid-April?

Much like yours. I don’t do anything with flowers, but the spring flowers are my favorite. Probably because the weeds haven’t caught up with them yet, so I can still enjoy them.

So far, the rhubarb is up about 8 inches as is the garlic. That’s all so far but there are lots of tomato and broccoli seedlings waiting for the right time to go out.

Wow, your garden looks amazing! I’ll bet it’s very rewarding to see everything waking up after winter.
We have tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peas, watermelon and potatoes going.
Happy gardening!

It is fun to see what is blooming in your next of the woods. Our garlic and onions will be ready to harvest soon. The poppies are done blooming, but the larkspur are blooming beautifully. I have harvest a few sweet banana peppers and even have a red bell peppers developing already. My blackberry bushes are blooming too. It is a fun time of year.

My weeds love April! Unfortunately, they also love May, so I got some more to go.

My April garden is still on the verge of something great. My snapdragons have emerged, the hostas are slowly emerging, some of the azaleas have bloomed, and the hydrangeas have buds. May is the more active month. And since the rest of my small garden space is used for veggies, the summer months and when things really start happening.

Looking good!!
I was out taking loads of pics of my woodland garden yesterday… its in its springtime prime right now.. Lots of gorgeous tulips and others blooming.
An artist friend who is using our garage to paint a friends motorcycle tanks said that the difference in a week or two in my little garden was amazing. He was quite amazed that most of the space is filled in now.. It’ll get worse too before too long and it’ll be a really wild bush area if Im not careful. ;)
I need to get in there & start pulling lemon balm now. It reseeds itself really well. I always thought it liked sun, but it loves dappled shade too.

My April garden looks pretty good. The chives are blooming, the garlic and onions have been up for awhile. My peas are being eaten as they sprout. Wait, that’s not good. Oh, well. But I’ve bought more plants than I can fit into the plot anyway, maybe I’ll put cucumbers there instead.
At home, the flowers are starting to show. They only have a short while before the trees leaf out and the sunlight is gone. But they look so pretty now!
