Quote of the Day: Barry Cornwall

June 3rd, 2012

Oh, the summer night
Has a smile of light
And she sits on a sapphire throne.

~Barry Cornwall

Earlier this week we had a wonderful summer evening after a weather front moved through. It pushed away all the hot sticky humid weather and cooler drier air moved in. I happened to be watering a few areas of the garden to keep the plants alive and it was perfect.

There is something wonderful about using a sprinkler, I love the sound of the water falling and the click when it changes directions. Reminds me of the occasional time we played in it growing up.

Are there any other things you experience in the garden that bring back fond childhood memories?

I was a sprinkler hog as a kid. It was not only occasionally but most everyday in the summertime. A great way to pass the time until the ice cream man came along.

The taste of water from a hose reminds me of being a kid in the summertime along with the taste of Pixy Stix.

Eating more than my fill of apricots is still going on today!

In my Master Gardener class they beat “drip irrigation” into our heads, largely for efficiency. I still water with a sprinkler. I will add drip irrigation to some parts of my garden, but I love the view of the sprinkler, the birds love it, and it’s closer to nature, which I think the plants prefer.

Lawn mowers definitely remind me of my dad and him mowing the lawn. When we were hiking on the AT I was always comforted by the fact that I knew we were close to a town when I heard someone mowing in their yard.
