Quote of the Day: Paul Sweeney

July 8th, 2012

How often we fail to realize our good fortune in living in a country where happiness is more than a lack of tragedy.

~Paul Sweeney

Last night we had the great pleasure of watching the fireworks display put on by our small lake community. Each year they collection donations from the residents and put on a fabulous display. We’ve lived here for 10 years and have only missed one year. This year we were lucky enough to enjoy the display on a friend’s boat, a completely different experience.

Fireworks have always been a tradition in my family. We usually spent this holiday weekend at the family cabin and we’d stop on a bridge in Wooster, OH to watch their fireworks display on our way home. Then we’d stop for ice cream and the holiday celebration would be complete!

Do you take in a fireworks display for the Fourth of July or any other holiday?

This year was rainy and foggy on the coast so rather than get into the crowd of 20+K fireworks goers and not see them well, I opted to watch those at the Mall in DC on Public Television.

After nine consecutive nights of fireworks, I’m fireworked out! Since I live on the border, I get the fireworks from both countries, plus extra ones for things like the annual Friendship Festival, War of 1812 Bicentennial celebrations, and seemingly random “Fireworks because it’s dark outside”. Plus I have some ambitious neighbours, who seem to think any night is a good night for fireworks.

Yes, I know I’m grumpy, but really, after nine nights in a row, I think anyone would be!

I agree. We too have some neighbors that have been setting them off every night for the past 2 weeks, despite warnings from the local fire dept because of the severe drought.

We buy some fireworks to let off on the 5th Nov on Guy Fawkes; either at home or with friends.
Cant remember last time we went to an organised display.

We live very near the Ohio river and so our community’s fireworks display takes place on the river. It is lovely. We get together with another family on New Years Eve and have a more modest display:) Which is especially enchanting if it has snowed. I do not know if this counts but we do include “crackers” at our Christmas feast!

    Great pictures, Susy!

We used to live in a dense urban neighbourhood where you couldn’t sit out on your deck to watch the fireworks because all the debris would rain down on you. And the noise…it was literally sounding like a war zone.

Since we moved to our farm this year, we like the 4th much more. The neighbours about 300 ft. down the road had some beautiful fireworks and we could see the town’s fireworks display from our balcony, with Mt. Rainier as the backdrop.

Our town this year had to move the show to some soccer fields in town, because a pair of nesting bald eagles were found at the fairgrounds, where the show is normally. :)

    Happy packing! :)

Only once prior to moving to Ohio had I seen one of the huge firework displays like every town here seems to have.
We drove about 75 miles to Ft Worth & it was the 4th of July and in conjunction with a Martina McBride concert.. It was a spectacle for this little country bumpkin. ;)

M’honey loves to go to the FIrework displays and our town used to have the most awesome spot for them, but they built some condos there and then moved them to the Captians Stadium which stinks in my opinion.

This year we went & sat on the side of the highway where we could see 2 towns fireworks really well, and 2 others somewhat well. It was kind of funny with us turning our heads back & forth..

Yes, fireworks from a boat are awesome. I love the sun rising & setting on a boat too.. just being near large bodies of water are awesome in my opinion..Glad you got to experience it. Gotta love it! :)
