New Laundry Room and an Update

July 21st, 2012

Many of you have been asking about the lady that just had to come look at the house. We never heard back from her, so I’m guessing the house was a little out of her price range. We’re moving forward with a few other jobs, namely the laundry room, the office and the upstairs.

The laundry room was one of the first rooms that was painted back when we first bought this house over 10 years ago. The paint was starting to show it’s age, it was faded, dirty and just looked a little drab. I had painted red halfway up the wall and the door was painted red as well. We repainted all of the exterior doors black a while ago when we painted the shutters.

The flooring was also old vinyl that was really showing the age both in wear and style. Since we had leftover hardwood in the garage from doing the rest of the house, we decided to install it here as well. We didn’t put this flooring down in the laundry room originally because Mr Chiots didn’t think it would hold up to all the traffic, since this is the main door we use. We’ve been really impressed with this flooring and the way it holds up, so we went ahead and put it in.

I used extra paint leftover from the living room and leftover black paint from the shutters to paint the cabinets. Now the walls are a happy green which help balance out the black door and cabinets. A rug from the attic was thrown on the floor and the job was complete.

The results are really quite impressive. It took us one day to finish the job and was a day well spent. The best part is that it only cost us about $5 for the glue for the floor. Not a bad room makeover for a day of work and $5 spent! Unfortunately yesterday was dark and cloudy so the photos don’t really do it justice.

I’m always amazed at how a small things can make such a big difference, not just in how nice the room looks but in the size. This room looks so much bigger than it did before, I don’t know why but I like it! The room is much brighter and happier than it was before, which is really nice since this is the entrance we use 100% of the time.

Do you use you front door, side door, back door or other door for your main entrance?

It looks simply amazing… awesome job!

And in regards to entrance, it depends on whether one of the dogs sleeps in front of the main entrance door (on the inside) or not, since it opens into the house and not the other way round.

If a dog sleeps there, then it is the back door, LOL!

That’s funny, our dog always sleeps in the main traffic ways too!

Looks great! I love the colors! We only have a front door to use. The side door goes to the dogs’ fence and the back door leads to a deck from the second floor that presently does not exist, so the door is bolted shut! A deck is in the plans soon and I look forward to using :)

Looks great. We only use the back door as the front goes directly to the living room and the nicer looking carpet. The back door goes into an enclosed porch whewre the W&D are and 2 freezers as well. A rug there covers the old carpet there and we leave shoes there. The front door can be used in an emergency.

Beautiful! I am experiencing the same type of jobs at our old house. This week i am working on the daylight basement living area, and while i loved my bright deep lapis blue down there (great backdrop for movie watching), i am taking it back to a creamy colour in hopes it will appeal to more people. Another thing i am doing is painting larger areas of the same colour. Instead of breaking up areas of one large space to feel like smaller room, i am incorporating the same colour in living areas and niches like the kitchen and bath. Looks amazing when everything is blanked out and refreshed. Just like your laundry.

At our new home, we use the back door alot. Unfortunately, it’s the guest bedroom. :(

I honestly love how your shoes are in the same spot in the Before and After photos. I don’t know it if was intentional, but it brought a smile to my face. ^w^
Great job overall! It’s definitely a nice change. And the black cabinets are so classy!

Not intentional, they’re always there because that’s exactly where I slip out of them every time I come in the door!

That looks much better with the warm wood floor. We exclusively use the side door (we need to drill through an anti-break-in jamb in order to have a working deadbolt to lock our double front doors securely together). Man oh man, previous owners installed cream colored carpet in the room we enter into, with about 4 square feet of vinyl right inside the door. My hubby is a logger…and we live on a farm. I HATE that carpet, to the point that I dreamt the other night that I spent hours steam cleaning it and it actually came clean (miracle!).

Question: where did you get tha T awesome modern-looking rack behind your washer and dryer?

I got that rack years ago at Target, I believe IKEA sells something similar. I love it for having scissors, laundry detergent and other often used items right at hand but still out of the way!
