Friday Favorite: Quotes
I’m a huge fan of quotes, though I’m sure this comes as no surprise to you given that each Sunday I post one. There are quotes scribbled on pieces of paper on my fridge, jotted down in the notebooks, copied and pasted into text files, and stuck to my computer with post-it notes. I even have a Pinboard dedicated to them over on Pinterest. Pairing quotes with photos is also one of my hobbies and you’ll find me often make them up in my spare time. Here are a few of my favorites:
Do you have a favorite quote?
Your Helen Keller quote made me think of this one:
A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
John A. Shedd, Salt from My Attic, 1928

I have a post card propped up by my computer which says “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools” – Martin Luther King
This quote applies to so many situations.

“May my soul, her want perceiving,
Turn her gaze to where Thou art,
And in all Thy fullness find Thee
Food to satisfy the heart.”
-Synesius
I so enjoy your blog – all things gardening mingled with many quotations – two of my favorites!

There’s a few i like…one i just discovered the other day. Rev. Al Sharpton was speaking somewhere and said, “I first heard it when Ronald Reagan got into office….we’ve got the down, where’s the trickle?” :)
“If you and i were the same, one of us wouldn’t be needed.” Haven’t a clue who to credit it to, but helps remind me not to let my guard down and get caught in the fads of the moment.
“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” –Mark Twain

I found this on a plaque while shopping one day and had to have it. It reminds me of my Grandfather because he has several of these qualities, but I also read it often as I go about my day and hope that someday it will remind someone of me.
To laugh often, to win the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch…to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

My favorite quote (not sure who said it first):
Live in such a way that if anyone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it.

“A garden should be a little to big to keep the whole cultivated, then it has a chance to go a little wild in spots, and make some pictures for you.” Edna Walling, Australian gardener, 1895-1973
This is exactly how I garden…I love it when you suddenly discover a new picture and one you didn’t necessarily plan!
