Friday Favorite: Homemade Ice Cream
As I sat down last night at 10:30 once again with no blog post written drawing a blank, then Mr Chiots handed me a bowl of homemade black raspberry ice cream with some dark chocolate on top.
We’ve been putting that old fashioned hand crank machine to good use. Each week I mix up a batch and we enjoy some every night. I have developed my own recipe over time, one that works well with raw milk. It is essentially: cream, whole milk, egg yolks, a small amount of maple syrup or honey, and a dash of salt. Then we mix in whatever flavor we want. When I get a few spare minutes of free time I’ll be adding my recipe over on Eat Outside the Bag.
A few weeks ago I steeped 2 cups of the whole milk with fresh mint leaves from the garden for mint chocolate chip. The week after that we stirred in organic cocoa and a few shots of espresso. This week it’s wild black raspberries. You certainly can’t beat homemade ice cream. One of these days I’m going to try a recipe for savory ice cream. Since I don’t have a sweet tooth I find this idea intriguing, Mr Chiots however isn’t so keen on the idea.
Savory ice cream – would you love it or would it be too weird?

I’ve heard great things about tomato basil icecream, or basil lemon icecream. Never tried it personally, and I’m not sure I would eat it as a dessert, but it sounds like it might be a good side dish during dinner.

Homemade ice cream is the best! I most often go with vanilla, and just add toppings. I think it might be time to make some ice cream this weekend… (the mint is a good idea, we have a bunch of that here, too)

Salted caramel ice cream, bacon, dark chocolate, and candied sage.
That’s a flavour profile that directly speaks to my tastes. Hee hee.
So yes – savory ice cream is a YES in my book.
[even a butter/sage combo, maybe with some lavendar… mmm…]

Aren’t you clever! Oh, that looks SO delicious… i’d love to have an ice cream maker… we did have a small Donvier one years ago, but as our family grew, it didn’t make enough to give anyone more than a wee taste. As far as we are concerned, good (real) ice cream MUST be served in big bowls or not at all :)

I was just thinking about ice cream, and how my verbena would taste so nice in it. For some reason I haven’t made the homemade ice cream leap….

I’ve made avocado ice cream quite a bit – although it’s still sweet, it’s not as sweet as “regular” ice cream. I’ve also done a basil ice cream, but that one was pretty sweet. I’d love to try a more spicy ice cream.

Last year, we had garlic ice cream at the Garlic Festival in Cleveland. They chopped the garlic fine then candied & roasted it before adding it to the ice cream. It was pretty tasty.
Im game for almost anything once. :)

Hmm…savoury I don’t know about, but I love honey and cinnamon ice cream.
Especially if you add the honey when it is almost frozen, so that it stays in in swirls.
Use it with fresh or poached figs, pears, blueberries…or on a waffle…it is perfect, not to sweet, with the slight bite of cinnamon and complements these fruit rather well.

I LOVE Homemade Ice cream ! I Really Like grandpa’s Vanilla Homemade Ice cream .. Or as We Kids like to Call it ”Ice and cold cream”! Hope all is well !
