Whispers of Fall
Last week I noticed a leaf falling from the tree above me. Then I spotted some yellow out of the corner of my eye. When we were driving around Cincinnati this past weekend, the smell of fallen leaves filled the air in the park. Everywhere you look you hear whispers of fall.
The tulip trees are the first ones to signal the change in seasons. Their leaves start collecting in the gutters and by the doors long before the other leaves start to turn. Soon after the sassafrass trees start changing, the dogwood trees will come soon as well.
On Sunday, I realized there were already enough leaves on the ground to consider raking. I can’t believe that fall is almost here!
Has fall arrived in your garden yet?

Thank’s for being so understanding… I am loving that we are getting spring coming in now. Really wish I could find the camera so I can take some photos too! :(

Hickory nuts and acorns are falling down with increasing frequency, often just missing my head.

We noticed the acorns are falling here too.

Fall is everywhere now. Every morning is mid to low 50s. The corn stalks are browning. The tomatoes are going the other way. The kale is growing faster than ever. The broccoli is enjoying the cooler temps. The Maple leaves have been lightening up for about 3 weeks and now many have turned. The sun is much lower in the sky and the garden gets shaded earlier. People are talking about how much better they are sleeping now that night time temps are lower.

So looking forward to winter for great sleeping, there’s nothing better than being snuggled up under layers and layers of heavy blankets!

My husband would take Summer over any season, but not me. I love Spring, Fall and Winter much more. I’ve seen a few acorns on the patio as well and our black walnut tree is losing some leaves.

It’s smelled like fall here for the last month, and some trees are already changing and starting to drop leaves. Fall will be here soon! We’ve had ground fog nearly every morning the last couple of weeks, and the lift has that low, hard slant. Despite nights dropping below 50 degrees, our days have been warm. We’re expecting highs in the upper 70s to low 80s this week…but we’ve had a first frost as early as Sept. 15th, so we’ll see! It’s definitely time to start prepare the house for cold weather.

Trees are coloring up early here in Minnesota, due to dryness. I’m not ready!

Yeah, the sun has now dropped low enough in the sky that we are getting a few slivers of sunlight in the living room. It won’t be long that the house will be flooded with sunlight. I enjoy fall but always hate to see summer go.

Not even close. Well, it’s only getting up to 90 today, so I guess that counts. Fall is my favorite season. Can’t wait to open up the windows again!
Enjoy the changes…

90???? We had 90 for a few minutes on a Sat in August and thought the end of the earth and life as we know it had come.
to jennifer fisk's comment
It was about 90 here yesterday too, we always have some HOT weather after the leaves start to turn.

No way. I can feel the tilt of the Earth and have noticed the shortened days; but its close to 100 today and will be well into October. Then, a sweet sigh of relief (aka Autumn breezes). One good thing about the late summer heat, it helps get the fall/winter veggies sprouted quickly.

Yep, I’ve been noticing signs for the last 3 weeks or so. I think the first was the ripening of some pumpkins in my garden, then a tree on a country drive that was already turning bright red. It made me look for others and sure enough, there are many others starting the change of seasons..
I love fall.. and I totally agree with the great sleeping weather.. ♥

The onions have been harvested. The kale is growing huge. The red maples began turning red several weeks ago, the birches are turning yellow, and the nights are refreshingly cool. Fall is in the air.

The swallows are gathering on the telephone wire. A sure sign that they are considering winging off south for their ‘winter’ quarters.
Will the first one return on March 13th 2013 their normal date of return?
I won’t be here then to see the first arrivals

…Yes, I am ready for Fall and happy it’s on its way! We’ve finally been getting rain here since we haven’t had rain since the end of May. I sat on the screen porch the other day as it rained and at that precise moment I couldn’t think of anything sweeter than the sound of a slow rain hitting the trees leaves. Summer has been a heartless b*tch here and I am happy to send her on her way! So yes, welcome Miss Autumn! :o)
…Lovely photos Susy!
…Blessings :o)
