Plants to Add to the Garden

October 1st, 2012

I rarely leave the house without my camera in my bag. There are many reasons for this, the most important being, you never really know what you’re going to see. Like this:

When we went to the Belfast Co-op a week ago Friday, we stopped to look at their pollinator garden out front. We spotted this beauty blooming nicely for late September.

Thankfully, all the plants were labeled (as they should be in public gardens). I snapped a photo of the label so I could remember to procure some seeds this winter. Downy Sunflower is a perfect name for this plant, it’s leaves are fuzzy like lamb’s ears. In case you’re interested, I found a few places that have seed:
Prairie Moon Nursery
Prairie Nursery
Wildflower Farm

I’m always looking for new and interesting plants to add to the garden, especially those that are beneficial for pollinators. Since this one blooms into the fall, it will be perfect. I can’t wait to spend some time looking at the websites listed above. I love reading about prairie plants and look forward to hopefully someday having a small prairie meadow incorporated into these gardens.

Have you discovered any new plants this fall you plan on adding to your garden next year?

We added African blue basil this year. We’ve taken a couple cuttings that we hope to propagate for next year as it’s not winter hardy and is sterile. It seems to thrive on neglect, forms a nicely shaped bush covered with spiky purple blossoms, and the bees love it. Bonus that it’s basil and, therefore, edible… though the leaves are very small.

Thanks! I just looked up that basil and I love the blue/purple flowers. I will have to try that next year.

I found 3 new local wildflower plants at the farmers mkt on Saturday. Can’t remember the names right now….. One is a type of hibiscus. I had 3 of the boys with me, so I didn’t quite catch everything the guy told me! Hoping to stop & talk to him again this weekend!

Good for you! Finding early and late bloomers is a real boost for us, too. Thanks for the tip.

that is really pretty. We have a sunflower-type plant here that looks similar. Lots of blooms, grows really tall and reseeds well. I love it and hope to have a few more next year. The one here is a bit more spindly, I’ll have to ID it now.

We’re really looking forward to winter as it’s one of our favorite seasons. Funny cause everyone else we know is saying “Ah, call us after winter”.
