A Day of Nothing – Work Related at Least

November 9th, 2012

Mr Chiots and I both work from home, which has it’s benefits and drawbacks. We really love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it’s difficult to take time off. If we’re home, we’re usually working. When we go out, we usually have work related errands that we tack on to whatever we’re doing. It’s extremely rare for us to take an entire day and do nothing work related. Yesterday we finally had…

…work related at least. We did work a bit in the morning, but at 9:30 am we headed south to Portland to see Skyfall, the new James Bond movie at an iMax theatre. If you’ve been reading here for a while, you know my love for 007. If you are my friend on facebook you know how much I’ve been anticipating this new movie. After the movie we went out to Flatbread for a late lunch/early dinner, then we stopped at Portland Architectural Salvage to look around. A night out is not complete for Mr Chiots if there’s no ice cream, so we stopped for that as well.

While we were at dinner we were talking about how weird it was to not be working. Normally we would have had a meeting scheduled or something else work related. I didn’t even take my camera (hence the word images above). Even though my blog is a hobby, it can be like work sometimes. The day was perfect, exactly what we needed.

When was the last time you had a day just to yourself? What did you do?

A whole day? Since way, way before kids–so . . .about four years ago? But I did book outta here on Mother’s Day last year for about five hours by myself in a city to eat and read books. It was glorious. And will likely not be repeated anytime soon, more’s the pity.

Gosh, I honestly can’t remember a day in recent history that I wasn’t either working or doing home improvement. Sounds like I need a day off!

Those days were decades ago prior to children, prior to marriage.

Groundhog Day (my birthday). I took the day off, slept in, then drank Really Good Coffee while snuggling with the Danes and poring through my farm/garden/organic books and magazines. It was heaven.

I missed two days of work as a result of Hurricane Sandy. We were south of the major impact areas though, and fortunate to have never lost power during the storm. My thoughts are with the folks up north that are still without power. I spent my semi-unexpected days off catching up on house work and I got out my sewing machine for the first time in almost a year. It felt really great to get back to something I enjoy. The spring, summer and fall are always full of gardening and canning. I look forward to the quiet winter weekends to do some more sewing or knitting.

I think it’s probably been at least since June that I’ve had a real day to myself. Even though I work a “traditional” job, it’s not uncommon for it to spill over into the weekends a bit. But my real time hit is being a landlord. I moved out of my duplex and spent quite a bit of time before and after that getting it ready and then renting it out (besides doing normal yardwork and maintenance there). That has eaten up any “time off” from my day job. The exciting news is that everything is rented out and I have some time off coming up over the holidays. I am so looking forward to some time to do deep cleaning at my own house, do some cooking/baking, and to READ! :)

i am currently kind of “enjoying” a day off – the third in a row, to be precise, because of a flu attack. it’s getting better now so i am already able to do some proper cooking, some reading, some small things around my computer…

… but reading about your love for 007 (i loved that headline “007 days of christmas”!), do you know this sequence from the opening ceremony of the london olympics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AS-dCdYZbo? if not (yet): enjoy! :-)

    p.s.: there’s the “a” missing in “skyfall”!

never mind… perhaps you could mend my “propper” (which is german) to “proper” (which would be proper english), too – awkward ;-)

is there any way to edit a comment, by the way?

What type of at home work do you do? I would love to do that. No kids at home so it would be much easier to do, only purrkids here now. Thanks for the post. Don’t remeber a day doi ng nothing except after my recent carpal tunnel surgery. No vacation since 2004. Hubby goes to see his mother when I still have stuff in the greenhouse and no one to tend to it so guess who has to stay home. That would be me.

The last couple weeks, I’ve had quite a few days to myself. I’ve spent the time staying up late & sleeping in, reading & doing 5-S. (There are five primary 5S phases: sorting, straightening, systematic cleaning, standardizing, and sustaining.) I have a long ways to go. ;)
I’ve canned, cooked, baked, and played online..
I really do love being home alone. ;)
