Evergreen Amaryllis
Last year I purchased a few different varieties of amaryllises from Van Engelen. My mom has a knack for getting them to rebloom year after year, I figured I’d try to do the same. Around Christmas, when my mom was visiting, we were looking at the leaves emerging from the bulbs and were debating whether or not they’d bloom or not.
A few days after she left, flower stalks started coming up. These bulbs received no special treatment, the pots were put on my front porch last spring when the weather warmed. Every so often I’d give them a watering with Neptune’s Harvest. I’m slightly amazed that they bloomed this year.
These beauties are ‘Evergeen’ amaryllises, not your typical pink or red varieties with big showy flowers. I’m rather fond of them and hope they continue blooming year after year! I guess I’ll try giving them the same treatment again, which is pretty much nothing special.

How uncanny! I am growing 3 of those as well. They are lovely.
I was at my friend Mary’s yesterday, and we were speaking of how we have not had success ‘re-blooming’ amaryllis, which we grow for each Christmas season. We were about to give up!
Mary lives in Trinidad, and she mentioned that plants there do not ever have a dormant period due to short days and cooler weather and so on.
Another friend keeps the bulbs growing and fed all year round, like any other house plant, and gets new blooms.
How does your mother proceed? It would be nice to keep those beauties growing several years in a row…

I’m not usually a huge fan of amaryllis, but these are gorgeous! After you posted pictures of them a few weeks ago, I looked for them online, but every place seemed to be out of them. Now that I know where you got them, I’ll check there!
I don’t have any flowering bulbs this year, though I often buy narcissus, then wonder why since I really don’t like the smell of them. I’ve read that there are some non-smelly varieties and I should really search them out since I do love the flowers.
My favorite houseplant is a nondescript Christmas cactus that blooms every year despite my neglect (or maybe because of it). My grandmother had a huge one that she could never get to bloom, but I took a few cuttings off of it anyway and started them. I’ve had it for about five years, and it blooms several times throughout the winter every year. My grandmother has been dead for three years now, and I’m so glad to have this memory of her.

Just checked, Van Engelen is out of them too. They have some other really beautiful ones though!

Beautiful. We have lots of the typical indoor plants, perhaps next holiday season I’ll pick up an amaryllis and give it a try. The beautiful flowers would be a great burst of color during the winter months.

Very nice! I will have to try some of these in our flower beds this year. We like the not-so-ordinary type of plants (though the ordinary find their way in too!) and these will fit nicely!

I have some white ones that are just about to bloom. I really enjoy flowering bulbs in January and February the most.

Last year (I think) I tried to get narcissus to bloom in stones & water.. only a couple did.. I’ll do like I usually do and just go buy them @ Heinins.. they’re inexpensive and beautiful.. and then I plant them in my yard after the long cold… then they come up the next spring
Usually plant the narcissus and hyacinths.. Those Green Dragon Amaryllis are gorgeous though and just might be worth it to give them a shot.. Gorgeous!
